PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
DEMON HUNTER – “Died In My Sleep”
It feels like a lifetime ago that Demon Hunter’s “The Last One Alive” was all over the Active Rock radio airwaves, but in actuality, it’s only been three years. While this is the longest period of time between Demon Hunter releases, it’s not unheard of for bands to use a similar release schedule nowadays. During the past three years, the band has experienced major life changes, as four of the band members became first-time fathers. According to founder Ryan Clark… “entering that amazing (yet stressful) phase of life together has brought us even closer. Between the insanity of parenthood and a variety of other more difficult scenarios, all as the world-at-large seemingly crumbles around us, there was certainly no shortage of content to explore on this album (Outlive).”
The band has certainly tapped into something interesting with their debut single from the album. “Died In My Sleep” hits you like a freight train from the opening note, so much so that it jars you if you’re not paying attention. The underlying driving rhythm moves along at a frenzied pace, like a heart beating out of control. While many bands would keep their foot on the pedal throughout and complement the heaviness with growls, Demon Hunter dynamically incorporates beautifully haunting melodies instead. At times, “Died In My Sleep” features the unbridled intensity of Sevendust, while at others, it veers off into the melodic phrasing of Gemini Syndrome. If programmers are smart, they will make sure that Demon Hunter picks up right where they left off in 2014. “Died In My Sleep” deserves to move into the upper echelon of the chart sooner rather than later.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
As predicted last week, The Pretty Reckless continued their ascent up the chart, and now sits in the #2 position behind Shinedown. Even though Shinedown declined by 81 spins this week, it still looks like they’ll be able to ride out at least a few more weeks on top (if not longer), as they currently lead by close to 600 spins. After week of gains, The Pretty Reckless may face an unforeseen challenge from Breaking Benjamin, who now sits in the #3 position after a strong week of spins. The gap between the two is only around 30 spins. If the trend from this week holds up, The Pretty Reckless may actually get leapfrogged by Breaking Benjamin next week. Keep an eye on Papa Roach in the coming weeks. They jumped all the way up to #12 this week after picking up almost 500 spins from the week before. Seether is further back, but they also picked up nearly 500 spins this week, so things may start to get interesting at the top within the next month or so. Stay tuned…
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Shinedown enjoys a third straight week at #1 on the latest Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart, and actually increases their lead over the #2 song. As expected, Pretty Reckless did move up to the second spot this week, but despite a minor decline in spins for “How Did You Love,” the lead is larger now than it was against previous runner-up Green Day. Breaking Benjamin shows solid growth to claim the #3 spot, and is suddenly a legitimate threat to slip past “Oh My God.”
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Bleeker scores a Top 10 single…
Three songs once again break into the Top 20 this week, led by the red hot single from Seether…
The only true newcomer to the Top 30 this week is Missio, though Goodbye June re-enters the tier (backing in at #30 despite a tiny slip in airplay)…
Volbeat provides the week’s highest debut, leading two other new entries into the Top 40…
Avenged Sevenfold has the highest of three songs entering (or re-entering) the bottom portion of the published chart this week.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Breaking Benjamin – “Never Again”
Papa Roach – “Help”
Seether – “Let You Down”
FALLING
Green Day – “Still Breathing”
Metallica – “Atlas, Rise!”
Sixx: A.M. – “We Will Not Go Quietly”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Suddenly, it appears there may be more of a battle for succession at #1 than I expected. Pretty Reckless looked like a lock to be the next #1, but Breaking Benjamin now seems to have the momentum. It would not be surprising to see some stations reacting to encouragement (or urgent appeals) over the next few weeks to make sure both bands get at least a week atop the chart.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
