PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
METALLICA – “Dream No More”
Now that “Atlas, Rise!” has started to fall, the time has come for the next song from Metallica’s juggernaut album, Hardwired…To Self Destruct – “Dream No More.” SiriusXM’s Octane has already jumped on the song, and it’s only a matter of time until the rest of Active Rock radio does the same. The latest Metallica album has energized fans from all eras, due in large part to the return to the classic sound that made them fans in the first place. What’s interesting about “Dream No More” is that it seems to pay homage to other artists more than a journey back in time to their early thrash days. The riffs have a noticeable classic Black Sabbath sound, and (at times) the haunting vocals are reminiscent of classic Alice In Chains. Because of its unique sound, it’s not surprising that the more traditional Metallica songs were chosen as the first three singles over this one. However, the success of the previous singles should prove to be an excellent launching pad for something a bit different from Metallica. Will it make it all the way to #1? Hard to say, but it should battle for the top spot in the not-too-distant future if the current love for Metallica at Active Rock radio is any indication.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
As predicted last week, Shinedown is now locked in to the top spot with no competition in sight. While the next likely #1 (The Pretty Reckless) gained some ground, they still trail the leaders by over 750 spins. They should move up to #2 next week, but it looks like it will take at least a month to unseat Shinedown at the top. At the moment, there isn’t much momentum for any song within striking distance, so these two could have an extended stay at the top. Unless one of the songs near the top suddenly picks up steam, it looks like the eventual challenge to The Pretty Reckless is likely to come from Papa Roach who jumped all the way to #20 from #56 last week. Other artists to keep an eye on in the coming weeks are Incubus and Seether.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Shinedown remains in complete control of the #1 spot on the new Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart. Metallica and Green Day remain #2 and #3 (despite significantly declining airplay). Pretty Reckless is the next challenger for the throne, but with roughly 50% fewer spins than the leader, a change at the top will likely take some time.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Chevelle finally reaches the Top 10 more than four months after their single made its chart debut…
Three songs make their Top 20 debut this week, but the clear story among them is the latest from Papa Roach, which breaks into the chart at #20…
Incubus continues their strong return to the airwaves, breaking into the Top 30 this week…
Seether leads a trio of new arrivals into the Top 40…
Along with the high-flying big names debuting higher in the chart, another four songs are also newly arrived in the bottom part of the Top 50.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Skillet – “Back From The Dead”
Papa Roach – “Help”
Incubus – “Nimble Bastard”
FALLING
Green Day – “Still Breathing”
Metallica – “Atlas, Rise!”
Avenged Sevenfold – “The Stage”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
While the early week trends suggest a little slippage may occur for Shinedown, the distance back to Pretty Reckless makes it look like they’re still on course to stay at the top for another month. The real rocket ship song appears to be the new single from Papa Roach, which should be looking at the Top 10 within a couple of weeks.
