PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
AMERICAN GRIM – “Idols”
The industrial overtones of Marilyn Manson…the frenetic intensity of Rob Zombie…the swagger of Faith No More…the raw punk edge of The Ramones…the sleaze rock vocal style of Faster Pussycat’s Taime Downe. Who the hell would ever think to create a rock and roll stew with all of these ingredients? American Grim…that’s who! The band’s latest single (“Idols”) from their upcoming debut album (Freakshow) may not easily fit into some subgenre, but who cares? The bottom line is that this song rocks.
Aside from the fact that the album is about “an entire generation of kids being over medicated, under educated and mass media manipulated,” there is very little information about the band on their website. Their “about” section on their Facebook page simply reads…“critics claim they understand.” I may not understand what that exactly means, but I do understand that Active Rock radio sorely needs bands like this to shake things up and (hopefully) create a ripple effect that reverberates to other new artists. Don’t wait for the crowds to arrive…jump on this bandwagon early and enjoy the ride!
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
Last week, it was predicted that Shinedown would leapfrog Green Day to take over the #2 position. They came up 10 spins short, but it is almost a guarantee that they will unseat Metallica at the top next week. Both Metallica and Green Day have hit their peak, and are now on the way down, while Shinedown is still on the rise. It looks like their eventual challenger is going to be The Pretty Reckless (as predicted several weeks ago), but it could take some time as the gap is still over 700 spins.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Metallica holds onto the top spot in the latest Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart with Green Day still at #2. The fast approaching object in their rear view mirror is Shinedown, still at #3, but closing ground quickly.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
No new songs crack the Top 10, just some minor order shifting…
Skillet has the only debuting song in the Top 20…
Nickelback just misses joining the Top 20, and settles for leading two songs into the Top 30 this week instead…
All That Remains has the week’s highest debut; Mastodon joins them in the Top 40…
Also new to the Top 50 this week are the chart debuts of newcomers Missio and Ded.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Shinedown – “How Did I Love”
Pretty Reckless – “Oh My God”
Nickelback – “Feed The Machine”
FALLING
Ghost – “Square Hammer”
Highly Suspect – “My Name Is Human”
Avenged Sevenfold – “The Stage”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Shinedown looks ready to take over the top spot next week (barring an unexpected reversal of fortune). If that happens, they will likely have a substantial lead over other contenders that are still moving up, so it could be an relatively extended stay at the top. Then again, Pretty Reckless could have something to say about that.
WRAP-UP
