PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
EVE TO ADAM – “Tongue Tied”
Many of today’s current hard rock acts seem to tailor their sound specifically to get airplay on Active Rock radio. Eve To Adam has already been embraced by the format (although not nearly as much as they deserve), so it would be understandable for them to rely upon the sound that got them noticed in the first place. To their credit, Eve To Adam continues to reinvent themselves, writing music that clearly is born more out of passion than a desire for radio spins. Their latest single, “Tongue Tied,” stands out from typical Active Rock tracks because it embraces the grittier, sleazier sound of Guns N’ Roses, the alternative vibe of classic Stone Temple Pilots and bluesy guitar solos that harken back to the days of Eric Clapton with Cream. And yet, somehow, “Tongue Tied” has a current flavor that would make it a standout track on Active Rock radio. In a format that sometimes feels like it’s on autopilot, we need more bands like Eve To Adam to push the envelope and rise above the din. This track is a home run!
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
As predicted last week, Metallica, Green Day and Shinedown now make up the top 3 after strong gains from “How Did I Love” helped Shinedown to leapfrog Ghost and Highly Suspect (both of whom saw significant drops). Metallica’s “Atlas, Rise!” picks up strong momentum, while Green Day stayed flat, making their reign at the top very brief. Shinedown is likely to move up to #2 next week, but Green Day can remain in the top 3 if they don’t suffer drastic spin declines. Metallica and Shinedown will remain in the top 2 for at least the next month or so based on current trends. The closest songs to them showing any strength are still 700-1000 spins behind.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
New week, new #1 song on the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart as Metallica continues their triumphant comeback. “Atlas, Rise” is the second chart topper from Hardwired, knocking Green Day back to the #2 spot after just one week. Shinedown moves up to #3 with nice growth as well.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Major increase in airplay for Pretty Reckless sees them leap into the Top 10 this week. Solid growth for Korn brings them into the group as well…
Through Fire and Devour The Day are both new members of the Top 20.,,
Skillet leads four songs into the Top 30…
Letters From The Fire is the only newcomer to the Top 40, thanks to over a 60% increase in spins…
With only a partial week of airplay, Nickelback has the strongest debut among five songs breaking into the Top 50.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Metallica – “Atlas, Rise!”
Shinedown – “How Did I Love”
Pretty Reckless – “Oh My God”
FALLING
Ghost – “Square Hammer”
Highly Suspect – “My Name Is Human”
Avenged Sevenfold – “The Stage”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
While chart positions may not mean as much as they once did (particularly for established artists), I have to think that Metallica is quite satisfied with the airplay results for their first “normal” studio album in eight years (we’ll just try to forget Lulu ever happened). Their release pattern for singles was nontraditional, dropping three in rapid succession, with each subsequent release cutting into the airplay for the others. It worked out well for them however, with two #1s and a #4, and gave them a long stretch where they had at least two (if not three) songs in the Top 40 simultaneously. The strategy wouldn’t have worked for everyone (possibly no one else), but Metallica has once again managed to rule the rock airwaves with the approach.
