PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
DOROTHY – “Dark Nights”
One of the most unique new artists to arrive on the rock scene in recent times is Dorothy. This is the type of band that is desperately needed to keep things fresh on Active Rock radio. If you’ve listened to any of their music, you know that they are blazing their own trail, not writing songs to travel down the road already paved by others. Other bands have infused a Led Zeppelin influence into their music as of late, but none of have done it with the sexy swagger that Dorothy brings to the table. It remains to be seen if they will get enough support to make a run to the top of the chart, but with “Dark Nights,” this band once again proves that they are a force to be reckoned with in the coming year.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
Predictions are fairly useless this week, given that it looks like Active Rock Radio stations are mostly on auto-pilot. Highly Suspect finishes 2016 strong, but should be challenged in the coming weeks once people actually get back to work. Stay tuned…
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Highly Suspect rides out 2016 in the top spot on the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart. Ghost and Volbeat remain second and third with charts as frozen as I can recall.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
How frozen were active rock stations between the holidays? The top 45 songs are all the same as last week, with no song among them gaining or losing more than a single position in the chart.
Dorothy returns to the Top 50 with “Dark Nights,” and AFI breaks into the published chart in the final spot with “White Offerings,”
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Shinedown – “How Did You Love”
Breaking Benjamin – “Never Again”
Starset – “Monster”
FALLING
Five Finger Death Punch – “I Apologize”
Dinosaur Pile-Up – “11:11”
Sick Puppies – “Where Do I Begin”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
It’s a dead week for radio, for most artists, for record labels and promotion companies. Can’t really be too critical of the stuck-on-hold approach because of that, although I believe it does highlight the lack of initiative that plagues many stations today.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
