PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
SHALLOW SIDE – “Renegade”
You will never hear Styx played on Active Rock radio, but if programmers are smart, you will hear one of their songs being spun in the near future. Nearly four decades after it was a radio staple, Shallow Side has done a masterful job of reinventing “Renegade,” giving it enough of a modern spin to make it fit the format. Not only have these Alabama rockers added a haunting vibe that makes you really think about the meaning behind the lyrics, but they’ve also infused this cover with a southern rock flair that is both unexpected and appreciated. Shallow Side has kept the bones of the original intact, but has made “Renegade” their own with some surprising twists and turns and a groove that adds another layer of depth to the song. Here’s hoping that this track gets the attention that it deserves once the holiday slowdown ends.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
Predictions get a bit trickier as the year comes to a close. Last week, Ghost looked like they had enough momentum with “Square Hammer” to dethrone Highly Suspect this week or next, but the song ran out of steam this week. “My Name Is Human” had a slight decrease in spins this week, but still maintains a 200+ spin lead. Anything can happen, but at this point, it looks like Highly Suspect will ride out 2016 on top (unless they have a drastic decline in spins next week, or Ghost suddenly regains its momentum). Look for a new #1 when 2017 begins.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.
SPIN IT…

SEASONS AFTER – “Fighter”
MESSAGE FROM SYLVIA – “Heart Of War”

DROP IT…

Kings Of Leon – “Waste A Moment”
Judah & The Lion – “Take It All Back”
Blink 182 – “She’s Out Of Her Mind”

Five Finger Death Punch – “I Apologize”
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
The seasonal slowdown means that Highly Suspect makes it to a fifth week atop Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart with hardly any change in spins for the top three. “My Name Is Human” still leads Ghost and Volbeat with one chart remaining in the calendar year.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
No changes in the composition of the Top 10…
Sixx A.M. jumps into the Top 20 on nearly 25% growth in airplay. Red Hot Chili Peppers climb much more modestly to reach a new tier as well…
Adelita’s Way is the only artist to break into the Top 30 this week…
New to the Top 40 is the second single from the recent Pretty Reckless album (it’s the only new entry in the entire Top 50 for the week).
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Metallica – “Atlas, Rise”
Green Day – “Still Breathing”
Shinedown – “How Did You Love”
FALLING
Five Finger Death Punch – “I Apologize”
Disturbed – “Open Your Eyes”
Alter Bridge – “Show Me A Leader”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
It’s hard to miss the enthusiasm that radio has for “Oh My God,” the next single from Pretty Reckless. The song wasn’t even targeted for airplay until January 3rd, but a relative handful of stations decided not to wait. On the one hand I understand – I’d say it’s the best song on the album by a fairly wide margin – but on the other hand, it’s certainly hard to justify rushing to air prematurely with virtually any song right now considering the wide variety of singles still in the mix for those coveted adds.
