PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)
NONPOINT – “Divided…Conquer Them”
Is it pure coincidence or deliberate that Nonpoint’s “Divided…Conquer Them” cracks the Top 50 the week after the most divisive election in recent memory? It doesn’t really matter either way. It’s just good to see Nonpoint back on the chart regardless of the reason. “Divided…Conquer Them” starts out with a cool (almost jazzy) vibe that carries through the first verse with subdued vocals from frontman Elias Soriano. As the intensity builds, the signature sound of Soriano’s impassioned delivery takes center stage, powered by a driving rhythm. Just when you think that the song is about to take off, they come back down to the subdued vibe of the first verse, a nice unexpected twist. There is something inherently cool about Nonpoint in general, and on this song especially. Never ones to conform to a sound just for the sake of radio, one thing that really impressed on the band’s latest single is the acapella ending that is as powerful as the rest of the track with musical accompaniment.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
Last week, I predicted that the current trend suggested that Pretty Reckless would be surpassed by Disturbed and Highly Suspect, dropping Taylor Momsen and company out of the top 3 for the first time in recent memory. What I didn’t predict is that Skillet would also be surpassed by both bands after a six-month climb to #1. Disturbed’s “Open Your Eyes” is now #1, followed by Highly Suspect’s “My Name Is Human” at #2. After weeks of songs firing up the chart, we may now see other songs that have climbed slowly have a chance to battle for #1. Unless there is a shift in the trend, it’s likely that Five Finger Death Punch’s “I Apologize” and Volbeat’s “Seal The Deal” will both enter the top 4 next week. They’ll both need a decline to reach #1, but stranger things have happened. Keep an eye out for Ghost’s “Square Hammer” and Avenged Sevenfold’s “The Stage” for a possible move towards the top as well.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Disturbed gets their turn at the top of the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart this week. It looks the time has come to start cycling through songs nearing the end of their airplay life. Last week, an aging Skillet single grabbed the top spot, and quickly began to lose spins immediately afterwards – falling to #3 as it was passed by both the new leader and sudden radio darlings Highly Suspect.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
No changes in Top 10 songs, aside from a shuffling of the order…
Metallica has the only song new to the Top 20 this week, looking to replace themselves with another rapidly released single…
Korn and Sixx A.M. both squeak into the Top 30 with their latest releases…
Starset has the week’s highest debuting song, premiering in the Top 40. Adelita’s Way joins them in that tier…
Nearly three months after the first signs of airplay, Amity Affliction finally cracks the Top 50, joined by a Nonpoint single that took six weeks to break through.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Disturbed – “Open Your Eyes”
Highly Suspect – “My Name Is Human”
Avenged Sevenfold – “The Stage”
FALLING
Metallica – “Moth Into Flame”
Green Day – “Bang Bang”
Korn – “Rotting In Vain”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
While back-to-back changes at the top might give the appearance of turnover at radio, the largely stagnant Top 20 tells a different story, with several artists frequently replacing themselves in the higher elevations (adding to the sameness). With the typically slow holiday period approaching, listeners in many markets may find themselves thinking it’s Groundhog Day instead of Christmas.
