ART OF DYING – “Torn Down”
In a somewhat under-the-radar way, Canada has been a hotbed of great rock music. Many of the bands don’t get the recognition that they deserve, particularly when it comes to radio airplay. Art Of Dying’s “Torn Down” is a perfect example of a song that is tailor-made for Active Rock radio, but inexplicably hasn’t cracked the Top 50 to date. Jonny Hetherington’s vocals capture the tonal quality of some of the more angst-ridden vocalists in the genre, albeit with a delivery that is as smooth as silk. “Torn Down” is a melodic anthem that blends nice vocal harmonies with gang vocals over a rock solid music foundation. If this song was released by fellow Canadians Three Days Grace or Saint Asonia, I can’t help but think that it would be shooting up the charts.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
Unless there is an unexpected change in the airplay trend, Skillet’s “Feel Invincible” will be the new #1 song next week. Pretty Reckless has started a meaningful decline, which should drop them to #2, with the possibility of being leapfrogged by any (and all) of the following next week: Disturbed, Metallica and Highly Suspect. Unlike the dominance that was shown recently by Metallica, Green Day and Pretty Reckless, the next batch of contenders have had a more “normal” rise, and don’t enjoy the wide gap between them and the rest of the pack. It’s likely that the battle at the top for the rest of the year will be between Skillet, Metallica, Highly Suspect and Disturbed. Avenged Sevenfold (“The Stage”) and Ghost (“Square Hammer”) are both showing strength, but they are not likely to challenge for the top until January if the trends continue as they have been.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Pretty Reckless remains at the top of the latest Mediabase Active Rock Airplay Chart, but change may be coming soon. Declining airplay for the leader and slower (but steady) increases for the new #2 song from Skillet suggests that the order is about to flip. Disturbed claims the #3 spot (for at least a week) on very moderate growth.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Ghost breaks into the Top 10 (relative quickly too)…
Chevelle cracks the Top 20 with their latest single, while A Day To Remember returns after slipping back a week ago…
Breaking Benjamin nearly doubled their airplay from week-to-week, and jumps into the Top 30 …
Another trio of songs is new to the Top 40 this week, led by the follow-up single to the recent #1 from Green Day…
Four songs debut in the Top 50 this week, weighted toward bigger names in the format such as Pop Evil and Korn.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Highly Suspect – “My Name Is Human”
Ghost – “Square Hammer”
Avenged Sevenfold – “The Stage”
FALLING
Green Day – “Bang Bang”
Korn – “Rotting In Vain”
Sixx: A.M. – “Prayers For The Damned”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
It’s interesting to see Korn become the latest band to (at least sort of) sink their own single high on the charts by releasing a follow-up single before the first one peaks. Metallica had that scenario a few weeks ago, and Sixx: A.M. did likewise to a lesser extent. This is a decent reminder that singles exist primarily to sell albums and/or promote tours, not to get airplay merely for the sake of airplay.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
