AVENGED SEVENFOLD – “The Stage”
When you’re at the top of the food chain, and the Active Rock world is clamoring for the first new material in three years from you, there’s a good chance that radio traction is going to take place rather quickly. However, there is a challenge when your first single is an epic song that is over eight minutes long. Upon first listen, there was so much to like about “The Stage,” but I couldn’t help but wonder how the song would be viewed by Active Rock radio. Given that it debuted in the #1 position on this week’s Octane Big ‘Uns Countdown, and in the #35 position on this week’s chart, I think that it’s safe to say that “The Stage” has been set for another monster hit from Avenged Sevenfold. Exceptions are definitely made for proven artists with stellar track records and huge fan bases. Could a lesser-known band make this kind of impact with this exact song? Highly unlikely, but A7X has built up enough goodwill to be given some leeway by a format that has very few true superstars. “The Stage” is the type of song that gets better with each listen as you peel back the layers and discover the nuances.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
As predicted, the top 2 remains the same again this week. The only difference is that Pretty Reckless narrowly leapfrogged Green Day on a solid week of gains, while the former #1 declined by a few spins. I can’t think of another time when a #1 song has dropped as low as #3 and returned back to #1. Even if both songs suffered a meaningful decline next week, there is no one close enough to overtake them next week. Skillet showed continued strength with “Feel Invincible,” and may now have the inside track to being the next #1 if they can maintain momentum and hold off Metallica’s “Moth Into Flame” (which continues to pick up the majority of the spins that “Hardwired” is losing on a weekly basis). Both Metallica songs are now in the Top 10, but that will change next week. Keep an eye on Avenged Sevenfold’s new single, “The Stage” (which debuted at #35 this week).
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Hang in there long enough, and who knows what might happen? That’s a rough explanation of how Pretty Reckless returns to the top of the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay Chart seven weeks after they previously topped the chart with the same song. A sudden jump in airplay some 13 weeks after “Take Me Down” debuted on the chart was enough to propel it past a flat week-to-week Green Day track by a mere 17 spins. Skillet makes a nice leap into the #3 spot.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Metallica lands a second Top 10 single before their album releases…
Kings of Leon and A Day To Remember both break into the Top 20…
Chevelle notches the only new song in the Top 30…
Avenged Sevenfold has the week’s highest debut, joined by Shinedown’s latest single as newcomers to the Top 40…
Breaking Benjamin and Adelitas Way also debut their new singles on the published chart.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Skillet – “Feel Invincible”
Metallica – “Moth Into Flame”
Ghost – “Square Hammer”
FALLING
Metallica – “Hardwired”
Prophets Of Rage – “Prophets Of Rage”
Deftones – “Phantom Bride”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
It’ll be interesting to see whether radio decides to give Metallica a second #1 song by the time the album releases a month from now. That would be an unusual occurrence to my recollection. Several things would have to break just so in order for it to happen based on where things stand today, but it would be interesting to see it happen.
