METALLICA – “Moth Into Flame”
There has been a growing trend of releasing multiple singles before an album is released. With Metallica releasing “Moth Into Flame” – the follow-up single to “Hardwired” – while the first single off of their upcoming album is still getting strong airplay, it seems as though this trend can officially qualified as the “new normal.” Like “Hardwired,” the band’s latest single is something of a nostalgic journey back to their roots. However, while “Hardwired” was more along the lines of the early thrash days of Ride The Lightning, “Moth Into Flame” seems to be a blending of all of the work prior to, and including, the Black Album. It features the thrash elements of the early days with the groove and melody of their work from the early ’90s. Based on the enthusiasm from longtime Metallica fans about both tracks, it’s safe to say that fans have been craving the sound that initially drew them to the band in the first place. What’s interesting is that the release of “Moth Into Flame” came only a week after “Hardwired” hit #1, and was still showing strong growth. If this track keeps up the strong week-to-week gains, it’s highly likely that Metallica will have a second #1 single in as many months.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
As predicted, Green Day and Pretty Reckless remain #1 and #2 respectively. Both artists showed moderate spin increases this week, but that is almost irrelevant at this point because they are so far ahead of the pack. The fact of the matter is that these songs will stay on top until radio deems it time to start dropping their spins by a significant margin.
“Moth Into Flame” (Metallica’s follow-up single to “Hardwired”) continues to pick up the spins that their previous single lost. Once the transition is complete, this song may very well be the next challenger to the throne. Other potential challengers include: Skillet’s “Invincible,” Five Finger Death Punch’s “I Apologize,” and Highly Suspect’s “My Name Is Human.” Other songs that had been showing strength weakened a bit this past week.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Rock radio seems to have a new slogan…
“Be all things to all people (unless they like classic / traditional rock sounds, metal with clean vocals or anything that resembles the ’80s in any way…in which case, screw them!).”
I don’t know how else explain the songs at the top and bottom of the Top 50 with Metallica, Korn, Five Finger Death Punch among the artists sandwiched in between. That’s the most polite way I know how to phrase my increasingly strong thoughts as I enter my third year of contributions here. No matter what niche(s) of rock you prefer, it has to be a tough time to try to be a radio listener when you’re virtually guaranteed to have a tune-out song every 10-15 minutes.
