SEASONS AFTER – “Fighter”
It’s been two years since the release of Seasons After’s first independent release – Calamity, Scars & Memoirs – an album that featured three outstanding Active Rock singles, “So Long Goodbye,” “Lights Out” and “Weathered and Worn.” The previous album was largely based around the battle that the band dealt with in gaining their independence from their previous label. This time around, the edge is still there (perhaps even stronger), but the troubles of the past are now firmly in the rear view mirror. “Fighter” – the first single off of the band’s upcoming release – should garner instant attention from Active Rock radio. It’s got the ballsy vibe of format favorites Sevendust and Saint Asonia with the outstanding melodic vocals of Tony Housh, complemented by a heavy rhythm and Chris Dawson’s guitar work that helps bring out the emotions of the song. Independent artists have to scratch and claw to get the radio airplay that they deserve, but the lyrics of this song tell the story of the tenacity that this band has to make it happen. Active Rock programmers would be wise to get this kickass track into heavy rotation sooner rather than later.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
It took a few weeks longer than anticipated, but as predicted, Metallica’s “Hardwired” has dethroned Green Day to take over the #1 position on the chart. The top 3 remain miles ahead of the nearest competitors. Metallica’s spins actually picked up steam, while Green Day and Pretty Reckless remained relatively flat. Still, Pretty Reckless is enjoying around a 700-spin cushion from the #4 song. As we’ve been saying for a few weeks, the only tracks that are showing strength equal to the top 3 are Volbeat’s “Seal The Deal,” and Highly Suspect’s “My Name Is Human.” Even with the current strength of each single, it’s going to take a significant drop from the top 3 for either to crack that tier. Based on the trends at the moment, it will take at least a month for Volbeat to reach the top 3, and a bit longer for Highly Suspect.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
It took a week longer than I would have guessed, but as seemed inevitable, Metallica has the new #1 song on the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay Chart. “Hardwired” enjoyed over 10% growth in spins, while former chart-toppers from Green Day and Pretty Reckless remained essentially flat, proving to be more than enough to send the veterans to the top.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Five Finger Death Punch inches their way into the Top 10…
Three songs jump into the Top 20 this week, led by another strong week for Highly Suspect, which saw their airplay more than double…
Kings Of Leon, A Day To Remember, and Beartooth all crack the Top 30 with their latest singles…
Ghost has the highest of a trio of songs new to the Top 40…
Devour The Day sees their latest single (“The Bottom”) debut in the Top 50 in its first official week seeking airplay.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Metallica – “Hardwired”
Volbeat – “Seal The Deal”
Highly Suspect – “My Name Is Human”
FALLING
Three Doors Down – “Still Alive”
Twenty One Pilots – “Heathens”
Foals – “What Went Down”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Almost incredibly, the gap between the top 3 and the rest of the would-be contenders actually increased again this week. The now-trio of #1 songs gained 267 spins over last week. That’s more than the net gain/loss of spins for all the songs between 4th and 16th. Indications are that the next Metallica single is due sometime in late October/early November. It’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility that they could hold onto the top spot until the next single is released, although Korn could still have enough life left in “Rotting In Vain” to have a shot at a short stay at the top.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
