VOLBEAT – “Seal The Deal”
Volbeat is one of the most consistent bands in Active Rock today. It’s no wonder that they are virtually guaranteed airplay whenever they release a new single. Earlier this year, “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown” – the lead single off of their latest album, Seal The Deal & Let’s Boogie – went on a monster run, dominating this chart for over two months. The recently released follow-up single, “Seal The Deal,” is already starting to climb, although the total spins is less than you would expect from a song that seems destined to reach the upper echelon of the chart. This is much more likely due to “Seal The Deal” being the second single than the quality of the song.
As usual, Volbeat has another winner on their hands. Although each of their songs has its own personality to some degree, there is a formula to Volbeat’s unique sound that is reminiscent of the approach that AC/DC has perfected throughout their career. There is no band around today that can make edgy lyrics feel as uplifting as Michael Poulsen and company. “Seal The Deal” is no exception. If you only looked at the images in the lyric video (see below) and listened to the aggressive guitar playing of Rob Caggiano (which taps into the Anthrax sound), you would think that this was a blistering track. Many of the lyrics would confirm your suspicions, but then there is the lighter, more fun side of the song, with lyrics like “get groovy” and “let’s boogie.” These lyrics would make you think that it was an upbeat, danceable song. Amazingly, you’d be right about that as well. Volbeat has managed to blend the speed of thrash guitars with an infectious melody and make it seem like that is how songs are meant to be written.
It’s hard to imagine “Seal The Deal” equaling the monumental achievement of “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown,” but it isn’t hard to imagine it reaching #1 at some point in the coming months.
PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)
As predicted last week, Pretty Reckless dropped from #1 this week despite showing an increase in spins, as Green Day’s “Bang Bang” rises to the top after another week with a solid spin increase. The way that Metallica’s “Hardwired” was blazing up the charts, I predicted that there was a chance that they would leapfrog Green Day, but their spin increase this week paralleled “Bang Bang.” Pretty Reckless only ended up dropping one spot, but Metallica should pass them next week. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where “Hardwired” doesn’t reach #1 at some point, but it may not happen as quickly as expected given the lead that Green Day already has on them. Regardless, unless there is a hot new debut, or radio does a 180 on one of the top three songs, it looks like it could be several weeks before anyone new cracks the top 3.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Well, that was quick! Green Day rides their momentum to the top of the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart, dethroning Pretty Reckless after just one week. Metallica rises to #3, unable to gain any ground on the leader, while keeping themselves in position to challenge for the top in the coming weeks.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Deftones crack the Top 10, despite virtually flat airplay…
Similarly, Zakk Wylde reaches the Top 20 with no significant growth…
Two songs reach the Top 30 for the first time, including Volbeat who more than doubled their spin count this week…
Two more songs broke into the Top 40, including a four-position gainer Bridge To Grace…
I Prevail leads a group of three artists who make Top 50 debuts with their latest singles.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
RISING
Green Day – “Bang Bang”
Metallica – “Hardwired”
Five Finger Death Punch – “I Apologize”
FALLING
Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Dark Necessities”
Chevelle – “Joyride”
Blink-182 – “Bored To Death”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Doesn’t seem as though the Labor Day holiday had as much impact on the chart as usual this year, with noticeable growth for a number of songs, as well as a fairly normal number of debuts.
