RED SUN RISING – “Amnesia”
After huge runs with their first two singles (“The Otherside” and “Emotionless”), does Red Sun Rising have what it takes to go for the “hat trick” with their latest single, “Amnesia”? I’d say that the chances are pretty good, given that Active Rock programmers have shown strong support for the band, and the song is as good (or better) than their last single. Unless the band has somehow fallen out of favor with Active Rock programmers, you have to imagine that they will enjoy another run to the top of the chart in the near future. “Amnesia” is already getting played on SiriusXM’s Octane, and it seems to be only a matter of time before others get behind it in a big way. What’s most interesting about Red Sun Rising is that each single has its own sound, proving that the band is much more than a one-trick pony. If “Amnesia” has a strong run, you have to start putting Red Sun Rising in the same category as Nothing More for up-and-coming bands that are likely to dominate the genre for years to come.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Chevelle sees the growth of “Joyride” stall out, but manages to double their margin at the top of the latest Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart. Spins were essentially flat for the song, but everything within shouting distance of it – former #1 songs from Red Hot Chili Peppers and Volbeat, and the seemingly perpetually #3 from Shinedown – were all down as well.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
The Top 10 songs of last week remain the same. Only two even changed positions…
The only “newcomer” to the Top 20 this week is actually a return, from Thrice…
Sixx A.M. climbs to #27, the only new arrival in the entire Top 30…
Slight increases for Foals and Bring Me The Horizon are enough to get them into the Top 40 this week…
“Show Me A Leader,” the lead single from the forthcoming Alter Bridge album, leads a group of four songs entering (or returning to) the Top 50.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Pretty Reckless – “Take Me Down”
Three Doors Down – “Still Alive”
Korn – “Rotting In Vain”
DROPPING DOWN
Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Dark Necessities”
Shinedown – “Asking For It”
Asking Alexandria – “Here I Am”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
The feast or famine nature of the chart in 2016 continues in full force this week, leading to one of those updates that sees very little change. Basically, the songs that launched with rockets strapped to them sometimes hit a plateau (until another booster fires at least), while the rest remain struggling to escape the forces of gravity. Luckily for listeners, at least most of the heavy rotations are relatively new at the moment, so the impact of a stagnant week is probably less noticeable to the ear.
