PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (by Adam Waldman)
CROBOT – “Not For Sale”
I still remember where I was the first time that I heard Crobot being played on Octane. I only caught about a minute or so of “Nowhere To Hide,” but that was enough to hook me in. At the time, I thought that it might have been Myles Kennedy singing on a side project. It turns out that it was Brandon Yeagley’s soaring vocals blasting through my speakers. On the band’s latest single, “Not For Sale,” Yeagley once again makes you stand up and take notice, belting out vocals over the timeless sound that is Crobot. One of the growing trends over the past few years is the strong influence of classic rock shining through in current hard rock / active rock bands. Crobot does it as well as any band out there. Although videos are rarely discussed in this forum, it is worth mentioning that the lyric video for “Not For Sale” is an even greater nostalgic journey than the song itself, so much so that it was almost impossible to pay attention to the lyrics on the first viewing. You can never tell what will happen at Active Rock radio, but based on merit, “Not For Sale” should enjoy a run that rivals “Nowhere To Hide.”
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Volbeat is proving quite resilient, as their latest single enjoys an eighth week in a row atop the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay Chart. Red Hot Chili Peppers have threatened to dethrone the leader for several weeks now, yet have been unable to do so thus far, and actually made only a minor incremental gain this week while remaining at #2.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
The order of the Top 5 songs remains unchanged, while Blink 182 somehow breaks into the Top 10…
Breaking Benjamin has the only new entry in the Top 20, despite at least some outlets being reluctant to play their current down-tempo single…
Hellyeah is the only new arrival in the Top 30, although Through Fire bounced back up to join them there this week…
Zakk Wylde (with an assist from Corey Taylor) has the week’s highest debut, entering in the Top 40…
Failure Anthem’s new single leads three songs that enter the chart between 40-50 this week, joined by a Pierce The Veil track that has been in and out of the published chart for the past month.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Chevelle – “Joyride”
3 Doors Down – “Still Alive”
Hellyeah – “I Don’t Care Anymore”
DROPPING DOWN
Sixx: A.M. – “Rise”
Five Finger Death Punch – “My Nemesis”
Hellyeah – “Human”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
No matter where you fall on the musical spectrum, I’m not sure there’s any better example of the current “Land of Confusion” that Active (?) Rock radio has become than this simple chart note: Blink 182 enters the Top 10 as Five Finger Death Punch exits that tier. While I haven’t sat in a strategy session for a radio station in a while, it seems rather obvious that the trend in many cases is toward going for cume (short for “cumulative audience,” simply the number of people who listen to your station for at least five minutes in any time period) instead of trying to develop a base of long-term devoted listeners who will make a TSL investment (Time Spent Listening). In an world where so much “narrowcasting” (such as satellite or streaming options) have long been portrayed as the major threat to radio, and indeed seem to be more commonplace by the day, I’m not sure whether this is a strategy that makes sense or if it simply is an indication of “I Don’t Care Anymore.”
