PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (by Adam Waldman)
PIERCE THE VEIL – “Circles”
“Circles” was inspired by the Paris attacks that took place in November of 2015 at the Eagles Of Death Metal concert. The imagined story is told through the eyes of two friends at the concert trying to save each other as the bullets started flying. If you didn’t know any better, you might think that the song was written about the massacre that took place last week in Orlando, FL. Keeping with the French theme, the similarity between these two attacks conjures up memories of the classic Rush song, “Circumstances.” The French lyrics in the song – “Plus ca change, Plus c’est la meme chose” – translate in English to “the more things that things change, the more they stay the same.” An American band writes a song about a tragic mass shooting at a concert overseas. Less than a year later, in a span of a weekend in Orlando, a singer is gunned down while signing autographs after a concert, and then 49 people were massacred in a mass shooting in a club. It seems that lessons are never learned. Pierce The Veil deserves credit for writing about what it must be like for innocent people as their lives flash before their eyes in a desperate attempt for salvation. The lyrics are much more somber than the mood of this somewhat upbeat California punk song, but the message shines through just the same.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
For the seventh week in a row, Volbeat sits atop the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay Chart. The Red Hot Chili Peppers narrowed the gap by nearly a third, but remain a fair distance back in the second spot. Shinedown both solidified their hold on the third position and closed up the gap between themselves and the songs in front of them.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Pop Evil surges into the Top 10, joined there by A Day To Remember…
Minimal change in positions 11 through 20, with only Deftones joining the Top 20 this week…
Veteran artists 3 Doors Down and Skillet both break into the Top 30…
Hellyeah has a spot in the Top 40 “covered,” joined there by Megadeth and From Ashes To New…
Three songs make their Top 50 debuts (in the final three spots on the published chart). This includes a recent #1 Adult Alternative format hit from Los-Angeles band, The Record Company.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Shinedown – “Asking For It”
Deftones – “Phantom Bride”
3 Doors Down – “Still Alive”
DROPPING DOWN
Sixx: A.M. – “Rise”
Five Finger Death Punch – “My Nemesis”
Hellyeah – “Human”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
A fair bit of change is evident on this week’s chart, but it’s tough not to wonder just how significant the difference could really be if stations weren’t so reluctant to move off of over-played songs. Disturbed’s recent chart-topping song, “The Sound Of Silence,” peaked some two months ago, yet it still remains in the Top 10, and accounts for more spins than nearly all of the positions 40 through 50 combined.
WRAP-UP
