PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (by Adam Waldman)
FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH – “Hell To Pay”
Although “My Nemesis” is still on the chart, it has started dropping significantly in recent weeks. This past week, the song dropped off of the Octane Big ‘Uns Countdown after a prolonged run at the top, and was replaced by “Hell To Pay.” You might think that Five Finger Death Punch was chosen specifically this week because of the song titles and the events that have shaken the country. That part is purely a coincidence, but there is something about songs like “Hell To Pay” that provide a cathartic release when the world seems to be going mad. There’s a saying that goes…“when words fail, music speaks.” Unfortunately, there are no words that are doing anything to ease the tensions felt throughout the United States. If anything, words seem to be making things worse. One thing that metal fans can agree upon is the power of Five Finger Death Punch’s signature brand of rage. Based on the band’s dominance of the Active Rock genre, there is no doubt that this song will be making a meaningful run up the chart once it starts getting the airplay that “My Nemesis” was receiving.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
The lead continues to shrink, but Volbeat still enjoys their sixth consecutive week at the top of the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay Chart. The Red Hot Chili Peppers cut another 20% from the difference, but remains more the 300 spins in arrears. As expected, Shinedown took over the third spot, but is still well back of the two front-runners.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Halestorm re-enters the Top 10 this week, with Hellyeah finally breaking through into the top tier as well after being stuck just short for the past six weeks in a row…
Avatar is one of two groups to enter the Top 20 this week…
Three new arrivals in the Top 30 (in the final three positions), including what appears to be a second straight hit for Stitched Up Heart…
Four songs reach the Top 40 for the first time, including the first single from the upcoming Skillet album and the second single from the recent 3 Doors Down release…
Four new entries (and one re-entry) join the Top 50 this week, including recent Music Discovery Monday featured artist Citizen Zero, and a second single from the just-released Hellyeah album.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Dark Necessities”
Shinedown – “Asking For It”
Chevelle – “Joyride”
DROPPING DOWN
Five Finger Death Punch – “My Nemesis”
Killswitch Engage – “Hate By Design”
Monster Truck – “Don’t Tell Me How To Live”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
A fair bit of change is evident on this week’s chart, but it’s tough not to wonder just how significant the difference could really be if stations weren’t so reluctant to move off of over-played songs. Disturbed’s recent chart-topping song, “The Sound Of Silence,” peaked some two months ago, yet it still remains in the Top 10, and accounts for more spins than nearly all of the positions 40 through 50 combined.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
