NOTE: Every so often, there is a chart glitch that isn’t easily explained. For the purposes of the HRD Radio Report, we use the published chart as the go-to source, even if there are occasional discrepancies (as there was this week). For unexplained reasons, there was no song ranked at #50 this week. The published chart lists Bobaflex’s “A Spider In The Dark” at #51. Although we now have an idea of what the song should have been, we’ve decided not to reveal it at this time because it will be a new entry once the correction is made in the next week or so.
PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (by Adam Waldman)
SICK PUPPIES – “Stick To Your Guns”
For longtime Sick Puppies fans, the first new material since Bryan Scott replaced founding member Shimon Moore may take some getting used to, but for Active Rock fans, the new sound will likely be accepted with open arms. “Stick To Your Guns” – the band’s first single since the lineup change – offers the melody that you’ve come to expect from Sick Puppies, with an edgier sound that fits perfectly within the format. For that reason, it isn’t much of a surprise that the song is ascending up the chart faster than most others. While the band did get attention on Active Rock radio with two singles from their last album with Moore (“There’s No Turning Back” and “Gunfight”), both songs were on the cusp of what you would normally expect to hear in the format. With their new and (some would argue) improved sound, Sick Puppies have moved from the cusp of the format to being firmly entrenched as a band that should continue to receive meaningful spins. This is only the first single, but if it’s any indication of what’s to come, the band should become even more popular with Active Rock fans.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Disturbed sees significant erosion in spins for the first time with “The Sound Of Silence,” but it changes nothing, as they remain easily atop the latest Mediabase Active Rock Airplay Chart. As expected, Red Sun Rising slips past both Three Doors Down and Muse to take over the second spot on the chart.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
No changes in the makeup of the Top 10 this week, with seven of the songs even remaining in the same position …
Volbeat almost cracked the Top 10 (#11) in just their second week out with “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown,” leading the way as one of two new arrivals into the Top 20…
Two new entries into the Top 30, including Sick Puppies’ “Stick To Your Guns,” a song that is performing very well out of the gate, and is this week’s featured song…
Three songs break the Top 40 for the first time, including the lead single from the new Avatar album, “The Eagle Has Landed”…
Two songs debut in the Top 50 this week, with a second Rob Zombie single and the new Tremonti track (“Dust”) being joined by a return appearance on the published chart for Hands Like Houses.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Sixx: A.M. – “Rise”
Volbeat – “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown”
Sick Puppies – “Stick To Your Guns”
DROPPING DOWN
3 Doors Down – “In The Dark”
Muse – “Reapers”
Slipknot – “Goodbye”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
It’s been interesting to watch the extended stay at the top of the chart that Disturbed has experienced, with a number of factors helping lengthen the run. It began with a moderate spin count the week that they first took over the top spot (which left the song with room to grow). That’s exactly what it did – in mostly small increments – for the next four weeks. At its peak, the song received over 10% more airplay than it did during its first week at the top. Just as the song started to slip, so did the pair of songs that had been stuck at #2 and #3 for a full month, declining at an even faster rate.
This week, Disturbed is back down to virtually the same amount of airplay that they enjoyed when the run began, yet it’s still more than any other song enjoyed at any point during this streak. The advantage over the nearest challenger is actually larger than the margin that they started with when the run at the top began.
Disturbed has had the #1 song for thirteen of the past twenty weeks (six weeks with “The Light” and the current seven-week run with “The Sound Of Silence”).
