PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (by Adam Waldman)
UGLY MELON – “Dead Or Alive”
Every once in a while, you come across a new artist that just has that “it” factor. Canadian rockers Ugly Melon definitely fall into that category. This is not a band that can easily be pigeon-holed into a sub-genre or format, but there is no doubt that they would add some intrigue to any rock playlist, particularly their latest single, “Dead Or Alive.” There are moments that conjure up comparisons to Sevendust and Alter Bridge on this track, albeit with a haunting darkness, roots firmly entrenched in a more classic hard rock sound and a mystique that isn’t usually associated with “active rock.” Ugly Melon is different in the best possible way. This is the type of band that bridges the gap between the past and the present. If programmers are smart, they will represent the future of a format that sometimes seems to be heading in the wrong direction when it comes to pushing the envelope.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Disturbed makes it a month at the top of the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart with a comfortable margin still intact. For part of the week, it appeared that Three Doors Down and Muse might both make larger gains, but a weekend surge allowed the front-runners to regain most of their airplay advantage.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
As expected, new songs are plentiful in the Top 10 this week, with the ascent of Papa Roach, Five Finger Death Punch, and Sixx: A.M. (which has the most momentum of the three with “Rise”)…
Ghost reaches the Top 20 this week, certainly closer to “the pinnacle” than “the pit” …
Hellyeah’s “Human” leads a trio of songs into the Top 30 …
Asking Alexandria saw the airplay for “Here I Am” more than double from the previous week, good for a spot comfortably inside the Top 40…
Kaleo and Like A Storm debut songs in the Top 50.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
3 Doors Down – “In The Dark”
Red Sun Rising – “Emotionless”
Sixx: A.M. – “Rise”
DROPPING DOWN
Shinedown – “State Of My Head”
Foo Fighters – “Saint Cecilia”
Pop Evil – “Ways To Get High”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
Disturbed still looks pretty good for another week (or three) at the top, though there were signs during the past week that the song may be coming close to peaking in terms of spins. Several other acts/songs are starting to look like potential successors to the throne, with both Red Sun Rising and Sixx: A.M. appearing to have chart topping potential in the weeks ahead.
WRAP-UP
