PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (by Adam Waldman)
MEGADETH – “Dystopia”
The title track of the latest Megadeth album is the most powerful single so far, both musically and in its message. Did Dave Mustaine have a crystal ball when he was writing this song, or did he just see the writing on the wall before others? This forum is usually a respite from all of the political turmoil going on in the U.S., but given that today is yet another ironically-named “Super Tuesday,” it seemed fitting to make this song the pick of the week to commemorate the occasion. While there’s still a chance that the tide could shift after today, it seems more likely than ever that, when the dust settles tomorrow, we’ll be left with choices that set the country up for at least four more years of increasing divisiveness. Are we truly on the road to a sci-fi like Dystopian society? That thought seems a bit extreme, but not nearly as far-fetched as it once was. Cranking up one of the better Megadeth songs in recent memory actually does have a somewhat cathartic effect, but doesn’t completely alleviate the sense of frustration that comes with the prospect of what lies ahead.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Disturbed sits comfortably atop this week’s Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart, although there was a shakeup just below them. Three Doors Down and Muse climb into the spots just behind the leader this week, but now there’s an even larger gap between #1 and the rest. The phrase “sitting pretty” seems pretty applicable for Disturbed at the moment.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Saint Asonia slips into the Top 10…
Sixx A.M.’s “Rise” remains one of the hottest singles in the format, surging into the Top 20 in only its second week on the chart …
Foals is the only new arrival in the Top 30 …
Baroness & Hellyeah both crack the Top 40…
Three songs make their debut in the published Top 50, including the Sunflower Dead single that features Jonathan Davis of Korn
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Disturbed – “The Sound Of Silence”
Bring Me The Horizon – “Happy Song”
Sixx: A.M. – “Rise”
DROPPING DOWN
Pop Evil – “Ways To Get High”
Shinedown – “State Of My Head”
Highly Suspect – “Bloodfeather”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
It certainly looks as though Disturbed will be the top rock song in the country through much of spring break season, and perhaps one of only a few songs that will enjoy the top spot on the chart for the next few months. Both “The Sound Of Silence” and “In The Dark” by Three Doors Down (the current #2 song) are relatively new compared to the rest of the Top 20 or so. Only four songs currently in that tier of the chart are newer than the current leader. While songs that ascend rapidly can also burn out quickly, Disturbed’s cover of the Simon & Garfunkel classic has a comfortable tempo and tone that’s considered suitable for play in every daypart. That could very well extend their stay at #1 for quite some time.
