PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (by Adam Waldman)
SIXX: A.M. – “Rise”
Even though they have put out some incredible music, since their inception, Sixx: A.M. has always been more of a side project. With Motley Crue and Guns N’ Roses now in the rear view mirror, the time has come for this band to soar (dare I say “rise”) to new heights and take their rightful place amongst the biggest names in the genre. This is one of the few bands that will appeal equally to fans of classic rock and active rock, which is no easy balancing act. “Rise,” the first single off of the band’s upcoming release (Prayers For The Damned, Volume 1) picks up where the band left off with 2014’s Modern Vintage. Although he is the least famous of the three main members (for the moment), the passionate, distinct vocals of frontman James Michael has already gone a long way in helping to shape the signature sound of Sixx: A.M. He is the perfect complement to Nikki Sixx and DJ Ashba (whose guitar work impresses more with each release). The huge backing vocals are reminiscent of Queen at times. Now that Sixx: A.M. is the main priority for all of the members, there is no telling what they can accomplish. Will they be the next Queen? It’s hard to say in the current music climate, but based on talent and songwriting, they may just be when all is said and done. For the sake of active rock radio listeners everywhere, we can only hope that this band gets the attention that they deserve. While it was bittersweet to see Crue end after all these years, I for one, am looking forward to the “rise” of Sixx: A.M.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
As we predicted, Disturbed surges past three songs to claim the #1 spot on this week’s Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart. Pop Evil remains at #2 (despite a decline of over 100 spins from last week). Shinedown drops to #3 with Foo Fighters dropping back to #4 due to some minor slippage in airplay. The gap between the second and fourth songs this week is a mere forty spins (a 2% difference).
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Red Sun Rising climbs into the Top 10 with their latest single, “Emotionless”…
Rob Zombie cracks the Top 20 this week…
SIXX: A.M.’s latest single (“Rise”) debuts remarkably well, easily reaching the Top 30 right out of the box. Halestorm also moves into the Top 30 on more than 33% increase in play…
Monster Truck and Thousand Foot Krutch enter the Top 40 this week…
Aside from SIXX: A.M., the only other new entry to crack the Top 50 is Hellyeah’s new single, “Human.”
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Disturbed – “The Sound Of Silence”
Deftones – “Prayers/Triangles”
SIXX: A.M. – “Rise”
DROPPING DOWN
Shinedown – “State Of My Head”
Highly Suspect – “Bloodfeather”
Cage The Elephant – “Mess Around”
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS
It could be the beginning of a relatively long stay at the top for Disturbed. Radio certainly seemed determined to drive the cover a song that is more than five decades old to the top relatively quickly (just nine weeks on the chart). It remains to be seen whether the song remains in place for several weeks OR it gets the “turn-and-burn” treatment (a couple of weeks of heavy airplay and then vanishes quickly). If you forced me to bet, I’d wager on the former rather than the latter.
WRAP-UP
