PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (by Adam Waldman)
CILVER – “I’m America”
You might expect a song called “I’m America” to be a commentary on the state of the country, but the true meaning goes much deeper than that. Dig deeper into this NYC band, and you’ll find that this track is personal, to the point of being autobiographical. Cilver’s founders (Uliana Preotu and guitarist Leon Lyazidi) are both first-generation immigrants, and the rest of the band is comprised of second-generation immigrants. According to their bio, the band views themselves as “the embodiment of the American Dream.”
Although Cilver’s founders speak more than a half dozen languages between them, Preotu didn’t know any English when she arrived in America, which makes “I’m America” – the first single from the band’s upcoming debut album, Not The End Of The World – even more impressive. If you didn’t know any better, you’d swear that Preotu was born here when listening to the vocals. Though this is the first release with the current lineup, Cilver did release an EP (which was a collaboration between the two founders and Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal). With a powerful Led Zeppelin-esque riff in the same vein as Rival Sons, and the equally powerful Preotu delivering the type of ballsy vocals that you would expect from Lzzy Hale, “I’m America” in an instant attention-grabber with a melody and hook that you’ll be singing in your head all day long. This is definitely a band to keep an eye on!
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
By a narrow margin, Disturbed remains atop the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart for a sixth straight week. Five Finger Death Punch closed the gap considerably, but came up 18 spins short of catching the leader (an airplay difference of less than one percent). Shinedown remains third, for a fourth straight week, as the top eight songs remained in exactly the same order.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Two new entries into the Top 10, as both Foo Fighters and Nothing More reach the upper echelon of the chart…
The Top 20 now has three new members (Aranda, Saint Asonia and From Ashes To New) despite only moderate to non-existent increase in spins…
Likewise, three songs reach the Top 30, lead by a strong showing for “Happy Song,” the latest single from Bring Me The Horizon…
The Top 40 gets three newcomers, paced by the strong showing for the debut single by former California Breed guitarist Andrew Watt…
Three songs also debut in the Top 50 this week, including “The Sound Of Silence” at #50, giving Disturbed the unusual sight of bookending the chart.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Shinedown – “State Of My Head”
Foo Fighters – “Saint Cecilia”
Red Sun Rising – “Emotionless”
DROPPING DOWN
Like A Storm – “Become The Enemy”
Nate Rateliff/Nightsweats – “S.O.B.”
Atreyu – “Do You Know Who You Are”
FUTURES REPORT
It’s always risky to draw conclusions from a limited/incomplete amount of data, so for now, I’ll avoid making any strong statements about what the following fact means…this week’s Top 50 Active Rock chart vs. the same time last year contains more than 10 percent fewer spins. There are numerous reasons that this could happen (some much more benign than others). No matter reason(s), it would be hard to perceive it as a development that is positive for the format’s future.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
