PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (by Adam Waldman)
ARANDA – “We Are The Enemy”
The latest album from Aranda is aptly titled, Not The Same. Brothers Dameon and Gabe Aranda have found a home on Active Rock radio even though their sound is quite unique compared to most others (in a good way). It’s not unusual for the HRD Radio Report lament the decisions made by Active Rock programmers. Often times, deserving bands don’t get the opportunity that they deserve. Less frequently (but still too often), bands that don’t fit the format at all manage to not only crack the Top 50, but rise fairly high on significant spins. Feeling the generosity and spirit of the season, today is a day to give kudos to programmers for giving Aranda’s latest single the attention that it deserves. The band describes their sound as “Rock, Funk, Soul” and the Aranda brothers have surprisingly worked with some high profile pop artists. “We Are The Enemy,” while clearly a great rock song, has some influences from bands that go beyond the Active Rock format. In a format that is too often the same, it’s nice to see something that’s Not The Same gaining traction, and offering listeners a refreshing change of pace.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Disturbed had an easier time of it this week, holding onto the top spot of the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart for a third week in a row. Not only did they retain the position, but actually extended their margin over #2 Five Finger Death Punch, more than doubling their lead from last week. Shinedown suddenly jumps all the way to #3, thanks to the largest week-to-week increase in spins of any of the leading songs.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
The holiday doldrums are officially in full-effect, with playlists on virtual lockdown. No new songs in the Top 10…
Foo Fighters move up eleven spots to break into the Top 20, the second straight week that they’re the only notable movement in upper end of the chart…
Not a single new arrival in the Top 30 either, meaning that Active Rock radio has largely set itself on “repeat” for most of December, with very little “shuffle”…
Drowning Pool’s latest single, “By The Blood,” breaks into the Top 40, a four-spot gain, despite relatively slight movement…
Top 50 sees two songs officially arrive, including the solo debut of former California Breed guitarist, Andrew Watt. The other “new” song is from Bring Me The Horizon, a track that has been getting airplay on various stations since July!
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Shinedown – “State Of My Head”
Pop Evil – “Ways To Get High”
Foo Fighters – “Saint Cecilia”
DROPPING DOWN
Bring Me The Horizon – “Throne”
Breaking Benjamin – “Angels Fall”
Sevendust – “Thank You”
FUTURES REPORT
As radio all but takes off for the month, an interesting situation worth a closer look is taking place with “Happy Song” from Bring Me The Horizon. The song received almost immediate reaction from radio back in the summer, but was set aside by most in the U.S. in favor of “Throne,” which was the “official” single. It’s tough to knock the strategy; the chosen single made it to #1, and has been in the Top 20 for over four months and counting. What catches my eye with its debut in the published chart this week, is the fact that the actual “going for adds” date isn’t until early January, meaning that a number of stations are so anxious, that they jumped the gun a bit. Combine that with literally months of play already on some key outlets (such as SiriusXM’s Octane), and it will be interesting to see what the ceiling is for “Happy Song.” Songs that are able to coordinate their radio support tend to fare better on the charts. That’s a matter of simple mathematics, but it would be asking A LOT from radio to expect outlets that were early adopters on the song to remain on it well into spring of 2016.
