PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (by Adam Waldman)
AUDIOTOPSY – “The Calling”
You can never say never when it comes to rock and roll reunions, but it seems that the chance of Mudvayne getting back together is fairly slim at this point. With frontman Chad Gray firmly entrenched in Hellyeah, former Mudvayne/Hellyeah guitarist Greg Tribbett has once again joined forces with Mudvayne drummer Matt McDonough to form Audiotopsy. Tribbett refers to the band’s sound as “progressive hard rock.” While Audiotopsy is different than Mudvayne (and Hellyeah for that matter), this new sound definitely should find its place on Active Rock playlists. The band showcases a variety of influences on “The Calling,” creating a powerful sound that would add intrigue to any rotation. From the haunting Alice In Chains vibe to the mystique of Tool to the tortured growls, everything works.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Despite being pushed hard all week, Disturbed retains the top spot on the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart for a second straight week. For several days during the week, Five Finger Death Punch closed the gap between themselves and the #1 position, but a strong weekend for Disturbed proved to be enough to keep them in place. It appears likely to be a two-artist fight for the top through the end of the calendar year.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Pop Evil cracks the Top 10 this week; the only song to do so thanks to a strong surge in airplay…
No changes in the composition of the Top 20, and only one song even manages to break into the Top 30 this week, as Foo Fighters prove strong enough to move even on a slow week with their latest single, “Saint Cecilia”…
The widely disparate nature of the Active Rock format (for better or worse) is on full display with the two songs that reach the Top 40 this week. I’d say it’s fair to describe it as a bit of a gap between Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Puscifer…
Only one song makes its Top 50 debut this week, that being “Bloody Sunrise,” the latest single from those “Always On Tour Guys” known as Wayland.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Disturbed – “The Light”
Five Finger Death Punch – “Wash It All Away”
Highly Suspect – “Bloodfeather”
DROPPING DOWN
Bring Me The Horizon – “Throne”
Breaking Benjamin – “Angels Fall”
Chris Cornell – “Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart”
FUTURES REPORT
An unusual situation arose with this week’s lone Top 50 debut song. When the charts became official last week (posted by Mediabase as “Published”) the 50th position belonged to Bullet For My Valentine’s “Venom.” When this week’s chart went to “Published” status, the Last Week column shows Wayland having been #50 and BFMV having been #51. It’s a scenario that I’ve seen occur several times a year for the past few years, where the history doesn’t quite match up to what was originally posted by the site. My outsider’s guess is that the software that compiles the chart for publication sometimes grabs the first “rolling chart” AFTER the “Published” version, instead of using what was ostensibly the official chart. I guess it just goes to show that computers are human too…or something like that.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
