PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (by Adam Waldman)
WAYLAND – “Bloody Sunrise”
Wayland is the epitome of an up-and-coming, nose-to-the-grindstone modern day hard rock band. With a relentless touring schedule, it’s hard to imagine how they find the time to record new music. But they do, and every time that they release new material, it stands out as something different (in a good way). Of course, different can be a double-edged sword when it comes to radio airplay, where conformity seems to take priority over originality. Like fellow mid-westerner, Kid Rock, Wayland has proven that they have a southern side with “Bloody Sunrise.” While the band isn’t from the south, they are managed by Jesse James Dupree (Jackyl), so they are (at the very least) southern by association. Make no mistake though. “Bloody Sunrise” is not pure southern rock, just a killer track with a southern rock influence. Would this song stand out on Active Rock radio? Absolutely! The format tends to push the limits at times, but usually for songs and artists that don’t appeal to Active Rock listeners. Wayland is exactly the type of band that should be used to add a unique, fresh infusion to the format.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Just in time for the holiday slowdown, there’s a new #1 on the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart with Bring Me The Horizon claiming the “Throne” (no pun intended). Breaking Benjamin slides down a spot, with Disturbed moving to #3, and looking good for an eventual chart-topping hit down the line with “The Light.”
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
One new entry in the Top 10 this week as Seether’s “Save Today” moves up to replace Papa Roach…
New to the Top 20 this week is the surprise hit from Nathaniel Rateliff, joined by the latest single from Highly Suspect (“Bloodfeather”)…
Three songs break into the Top 30 this week, including the latest from Godsmack, who climb two spots despite a slight decline in airplay…
Four songs join the Top 40 this week, including the highest debut of the week from English import act, The Struts…
Five more songs make their Top 50 debut in this week’s chart, accounting for all but one of the bottom six positions.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Bring Me The Horizon – “Throne”
Disturbed – “The Light”
Pop Evil – “Ways To Get High”
DROPPING DOWN
Breaking Benjamin – “Angels Fall”
Red Sun Rising – “The Otherside”
Islander – “Cold Speak”
FUTURES REPORT
The inevitable holiday slowdown is fast-approaching, making it appear likely that there may only be one or two more changes at the top before 2016 arrives. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing given the relative newness of the likely successor. However, it could create a fairly large logjam when January rolls around, with at least three heavyweights hoping for number #1 songs, but waiting for movement to pick up again.
WRAP-UP
