PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
SHALLOW SIDE – “Stand Up”
In 2014, independent Alabama rockers Shallow Side caught my attention with their song “My Addiction,” which featured a distinct banjo intro (not something that you see often, if ever, in Active Rock). The band is back with another infectiously melodic single entitled “Stand Up.” Blending of rock genres has become more commonplace in recent times, but it isn’t often that you find a rock band embracing their pop side as well. Of course, Shallow Side’s previous use of the banjo shows that they aren’t afraid to push the envelope. The powerful lead vocals complemented by melodic backing vocals over a driving rhythm helps “Stand Up” to stand out as a song that would add a fresh element to Active Rock playlists.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

UGLY KID JOE – “She’s Already Gone”
WAYLAND – “Bloody Sunrise”
SKINDRED – “Under Attack”
AUDIOTOPSY – “The Calling”
GEMINI SYNDROME – “Eternity”
DROP IT…
Ghost – “Cirice”
Awolnation – “I Am”

Beartooth – “In Between”
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Make it four weeks at #1 for Pop Evil on the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart, despite the loss of nearly 5% of their airplay week-to-week. Their lead over #2 (Red Sun Rising) and the new #3 (Breaking Benjamin) was so substantial, that equal amounts of growth for both still left Pop Evil with margin of over 300 spins.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Slipknot backs into the Top 10 despite a slight decline in airplay versus last week…
New to the Top 20 this week are the latest singles from Disturbed (“The Light”) and Three Days Grace (“Fallen Angel”), as the year of big-name acts continues…
The only new arrival in the Top 30 continues with the big-name trend – a big jump by Five Finger Death Punch’s “Wash It All Away” on the strength of nearly 50% increased airplay…
Three songs reach the Top 40 for the first time, including a nice boost in both spins and position for From Ashes To New…
After more than two months of being close, Rubikon finally enters the Top 50 with “Live That Lie.”
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Chris Cornell – “Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart”
Bring Me The Horizon – “Throne”
Five Finger Death Punch – “Wash It All Away”
DROPPING DOWN
Shinedown – “Cut The Cord”
Five Finger Death Punch – “Jekyll & Hyde”
Saint Asonia – “Better Place”
FUTURES REPORT
Predictions were fairly easy last week due to the sheer size of the lead that Pop Evil had over the rest of the field. This week it’s tougher to forecast, with a good chance of a tight three-way battle for the top spot between the current leader and contenders Red Sun Rising and Chris Cornell. It would take an above average increase, combined with an unusually sharp fall by Pop Evil, to put Cornell there directly, so a transitional week could give Red Sun Rising a most impressive achievement. Of course, that is unless radio decides – whether consciously or unconsciously – to prevent it from happening.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
