PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
SONIC X – “Save Yourself”
If Active Rock playlists were actually based on what would appeal to listeners, bands like Sonic X would certainly be in the mix, if not heavy rotation. While the band got some attention on SiriusXM’s Octane with their debut single, “Pray,” they do not get nearly the attention that they deserve. “Save Yourself” is another song that, by all rights, should be getting played on Active Rock radio, especially when you consider the number of songs that do get played that don’t fit the format at all. Unfortunately, merit rarely comes into play for DIY bands like Sonic X. The band’s fresh, edgy sound would be welcomed with open arms by listeners if they had the opportunity to hear songs like “Save Yourself” on the radio, and for that matter, the entire 4-song EP. Do yourself a favor and check out Sonic X and then call your local station to request “Save Yourself.”
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Pop Evil scores a third week at the top of the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart, actually substantially increasing their advantage despite a flat number of spins. Shinedown slips over 10% in airplay but remains at #2, with Red Sun Rising climbing to the #3 spot.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Huge jump for Chris Cornell this week as “Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart” cracks the Top 5. Foo Fighters returns to the Top 10 and Bring Me The Horizon climbing into that tier as well with “Throne”…
Halestorm is newly arrived in the Top 20 while Muse returns with “Mercy” for the second time…
Seether & Trivium both break into the Top 30…
Disturbed makes a strong debut with their new single, “The Light,” leading three tracks into the Top 40…
Three new entries in the bottom portion of the Top 50, including a resurgent Atreyu which returns to the chart after a week out. From Ashes To New finally breaks in after nearly two months of bubbling just outside of the published chart, and Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats who quite likely never imagined themselves with an Active Rock chart hit at all.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Chris Cornell – “Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart”
Bring Me The Horizon – “Throne”
Disturbed – “The Light”
DROPPING DOWN
Shinedown – “Cut The Cord”
Five Finger Death Punch – “Jekyll & Hyde”
Disturbed – “The Vengeful One”
FUTURES REPORT
It could be that Pop Evil will suffer a rapid descent, but if not, their lead over the rest of the chart is so large that they should expect to hold onto the top spot for at least another week, barring a concerted effort designed to prevent that. It would be interesting if newcomers Red Sun Rising were pushed into the top spot, but it seems at least equally likely that programmers’ love for retro artists like Chris Cornell will make him the next artist to sit atop the chart.
WRAP-UP
