PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
SEASONS AFTER – “Weathered and Worn”
If ever there was a underrated artist whose music is tailor-made for Active Rock radio, Seasons After is it. They get their fair share of spins, but based on their radio-friendly sound, it is fair to say that they should be battling for a spot in the upper echelon of the chart. From their album Calamity Scars & Memoirs, “Weathered and Worn” is yet another incredibly strong single (following “So Long Goodbye” and “Lights Out”). You have to wonder what heights they would have reached by now if they had the support of the major label that they were signed to before a contentious parting of ways. As a DIY band putting out their music independently, it’s a challenge to get the attention that they so richly deserve. Like their previous singles, “Weathered And Worn” features huge hooks, impressive vocal harmonies and an ideal mix of edginess and melody. There is a lot of truth to the opening line of the first verse of the song… “we’re all victims of our circumstance.” Under different circumstances, Seasons After would probably enjoy the same success as the heavy hitters in the genre who seem to climb to the top of the charts with each single.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.
SPIN IT…
SEPTEMBER MOURNING – “Children Of Fate”
GEMINI SYNDROME – “Eternity”
RUBIKON – “Live That Lie”
FROM ASHES TO NEW – “Through It All”
SKINDRED – “Under Attack”
AWAKEN THE EMPIRE – “Cross My Heart”
DROP IT…
Ghost – “Cirice”
Awolnation – “I Am”
Mumford & Sons – “The Wolf”
The Struts – “Could Have Been Me”
The Arcs – “Outta My Mind”
In This Moment – “Big Bad Wolf”
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
After spending seven weeks in the top three, the wait is over for Pop Evil, as “Footsteps” becomes the band’s fourth #1 song on the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart. It wasn’t easy; a mere 21 spins (less than 1% difference) was the margin that displaced Shinedown from the top. Now it falls to Five Finger Death Punch to play the waiting game, sitting at #3 again this week.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
While the top spot in the chart changed hands, very little else on the upper end followed suit. After the top two positions, the rest of the first thirteen remain locked in place…
In the top 22 spots, only one song moved more than one position up or down, with Ghost replacing Asking Alexandria in the Top 20…
Three songs did manage to crack the Top 30, including singles from Wilson and Islander that have the fairly unusual distinction of sharing the same spin total for two consecutive weeks (both were +29 this week, both receiving 218 monitored plays last week)…
Three songs also reach the Top 40 for the first time, the highest of the group being the next probable hit from Three Days Grace…
Another trio of songs debut in the Top 50, led by Parkway Drive, joined by Art Of Dying and Atreyu.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Pop Evil – “Footsteps”
Red Sun Rising – “The Otherside”
Halestorm – “I Am The Fire”
DROPPING DOWN
Highly Suspect – “Lydia”
Disturbed – “The Vengeful One”
Motionless In White – “Unstoppable”
FUTURES REPORT
IF the early trends for the coming week hold, Pop Evil looks likely to spend at least one more week at the top before another song makes a move. Five Finger Death Punch and Breaking Benjamin look as though they could be next in line to battle for #1. A potential race to the top a few weeks from now might be shaping up between Foo Fighters and Chris Cornell.
