PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
WE CAME AS ROMANS – “The World I Used To Know”
If you’re old enough to be nostalgic about anything, you will connect with “The World I Used To Know,” the latest single from We Came As Romans. At some point in time, we all deal with a loss of innocence. On 9/11/01, citizens of the United States all experienced a collective loss of innocence. While this grand scale tragedy clearly set a line of demarcation of a time when life was much different, the loss of innocence can happen at anytime to anyone. Often times, it is realized after some sort of loss, but it can also happen gradually over time as we move from one day to the next, eventually taking a peak in the rear view mirror and looking back fondly on days gone by. “The World I Used To Know” may be a microcosm of sorts for longtime fans of We Came As Romans who long for the days when the band featured a more aggressive sound. However, as far as Active Rock radio is concerned, this sound is a perfect fit, melodic with a bit of an edge. In a week filled with the loss of childhood heroes, the anniversary of 9/11 and the loss of a childhood friend today, this song hit home in many ways on a personal level.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Shinedown makes it seven total weeks at #1 (and four in a row) with “Cut The Cord” still firmly atop the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart. Pop Evil waits patiently at #2 with “Footsteps,” while Five Finger Death Punch inches up to the third spot with “Jekyll & Hyde” as Disturbed falls back on declining airplay.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
No changes in the composition of the Top 10 this week, and little change in the order either for that matter…
Asking Alexandria is the only artist to crack the Top 20 this week…
Only one artist breaks into the Top 30 this week – Halestorm – who could have jumped at least another 10 spots if stations would let go of their previous single and switch to “I Am The Fire”…
Trivium is the only newcomer to the Top 40 this week thanks to more than 50% airplay increase with their latest single, “Until The World Goes Cold”…
The latest single from Three Days Grace (“Fallen Angel”) is the highest song to debut this week, joined by newcomers Separations who squeaked into the final spot of the Top 50.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Red Sun Rising – “The Otherside”
Chris Cornell – “Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart”
Halestorm – “I Am The Fire”
DROPPING DOWN
Disturbed – “The Vengeful One”
The Struts – “Could Have Been Me”
Mumford & Son – “The Wolf”
FUTURES REPORT
A very slight decline in spins for Shinedown might be the start of a trend that moves them off the top of the chart with Pop Evil appearing to be the most likely beneficiary. Several other songs with long runs in the upper region of the chart might also have a chance to pick up more airplay from that change as well, but they’re all far enough away from the top that it would be almost impossible for them to get there on declining spins for Shinedown alone. What complicates predicting is the ability of a single station ownership group to make a coordinated change (up or down) on a song and produce an unusually large swing.
