PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
TREMONTI – “Radical Change”
There is an inherent risk to adding “Radical Change” to any Active Rock playlist, but not for the reason that you may think. The risk lies with listeners in their cars, not with the stations that are looking to add some (much-needed) balls to their rotation. It’s hard to imagine not putting the pedal to the metal when the song comes on. “Radical Change” hits you like a freight train from the opening note with furious guitar playing and thunderous drumming, reminiscent of the intense thrash songs that The Big Four delivered in their heyday. Nowadays, this kind of intensity is usually accompanied by virtually indecipherable guttural growls, but Mark Tremonti maintains the clean, melodic vocal style that he employed on “Another Heart,” the debut single from Cauterize. Tremonti’s latest single is most certainly a “radical change” from much of what is played on Active Rock radio these days (in a good way). The song cracked the Top 50 this week, although the spins for the week were fairly limited (likely due to the altered playlists over the holiday weekend). For the sake of Active Rock listeners, we can only hope that this song gains traction and makes a run up the charts.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.
SPIN IT…
GEMINI SYNDROME – “Eternity”
RUBIKON – “Live That Lie”
FROM ASHES TO NEW – “Through It All”
ATREYU – “Long Live”
AUDIOTOPSY – “The Calling”
DROP IT…
Awolnation – “I Am”
Mumford & Sons – “The Wolf”
The Struts – “Could Have Been Me”
The Arcs – “Outta My Mind”
In This Moment – “Big Bad Wolf”
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Shinedown claims a sixth week at #1 as “Cut The Cord” remains atop the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart. Pop Evil rises to #2 on basically flat spins as Disturbed suffers significant erosion in airplay and slips to #3. Five Finger Death Punch remains entrenched at #4.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Foo Fighters reach the Top 10 with their latest single, “Outside” …
Chris Cornell leads four songs into the Top 20, but was the only song of the quartet to show significant gains in airplay; the others advance largely due to the decline of other songs …
Three songs climb into the Top 30, one of which (The Arcs) actually rises four spots while having fewer spins than the previous week, again attrition making the advance possible …
Four new entries in the Top 40 this week, led by Islander with “Cold Speak” and the debut of the next single from Halestorm, “I Am The Fire”…
Bridge To Grace leads a strong group of five songs that debut in the Top 50. They are joined by a duo currently on tour together, Trivium and Tremonti.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Foo Fighters – “Outside”
Chris Cornell – “Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart”
Halestorm – “I Am The Fire”
DROPPING DOWN
Disturbed – “The Vengeful One”
Halestorm – “Amen”
I Prevail – “Blank Space”
FUTURES REPORT
A lot of movement on the chart this week, but that’s not necessarily an indication of a lot of actual change. The spins that Disturbed lost appear to have largely gone to Foo Fighters and/or Chris Cornell. The rest of the higher charting songs were largely unchanged in terms of actual airplay. Most of the other changes were fairly small, with chart positions changing hands on the basis of several songs near the middle (Aranda, Of Mice And Men) falling off of the chart and having their spins scattered across a number of titles. Across the Top 50, no fewer than eight songs lost airplay but gained chart positions, although some of that could be attributed to stations that ran special holiday weekend programs which leaves less time for the normal rotation.
