PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
BOBAFLEX – “Mama Don’t Take My Drugs Away”
Bobaflex has had previous success on Active Rock radio, and continues to write songs that make you reach for the dial and crank up the volume. “Mama Don’t Take My Drugs Away” features everything that you want in an Active Rock song, but inexplicably, it still hasn’t cracked the Top 50 to date. Thankfully, SiriusXM’s Octane has jumped on the track already to give it some exposure. Although I personally have only heard it a handful of times on Octane, I know that it’s getting played because fans of the band are sharing photos of their radios every time that they hear the song (another clever way that this hard-working, DIY band connects with their fans). While existing fans have embraced the latest Bobaflex single, Active Rock radio listeners are not getting the opportunity that they deserve to discover the band. Yes, this is going to sound like a broken record in this forum, but it’s mind-boggling that programmers continue to waste spins on a number of bands that are a terrible fit for the format, while bands that are a perfect fit fight for they attention that they deserve. Any programmer that hears “Mama Don’t Take My Drugs Away” and chooses to spin songs that clearly don’t fit the Active Rock format instead, probably should have their drugs taken away!
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Another week at #1 for Shinedown’s “Cut The Cord” as the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart remains largely unchanged. Disturbed is still second with Pop Evil and Five Finger Death Punch once again just behind.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Only one position change in the Top 13 songs this week, a flipping of #8 and #9…
Chris Cornell has the only song to debut in the Top 20; it’s also the only song to break into the Top 30 for the first time as it moves from 31 to 20…
Like A Storm has a second straight benchmark week, leading two new arrivals into the Top 40…
Only two debuts in the Top 50, and one of those is actually a re-entry.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Red Sun Rising – “The Otherside”
Foo Fighters – “Outside”
Chris Cornell – “Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart”
DROPPING DOWN
Disturbed – “The Vengeful One”
Nothing More – “Jenny”
Halestorm – “Amen”
FUTURES REPORT
A good bit of the stagnation on the chart appears to be a function of how quickly several of the top songs flew up the chart. The average time for the current Top 5 to have been in heavy rotation is around ten weeks now, and most of those songs reached the top within a couple of weeks of their chart debut. It does look like there will be at least some shuffling of the order at the top by this time next week, but since there was less than usual to discuss this week, I’ll take advantage of the opportunity and leave you with a classic song that seems more than a little appropriate…
