PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
BUTCHER BABIES – “Never Go Back”
Butcher Babies cracked the Top 50 this week with their latest single, “Never Go Back.” The track is one of the more interesting to enter the charts in recent weeks, adding some welcomed spice to shake things up a bit. Female-fronted bands have made their presence felt in recent times on the chart, so seeing Butcher Babies gaining traction with “Never Go Back” is a continuation of a growing trend. However, this track bears little comparison to the current Active Rock songs featuring female vocalists. A better comparison would be to take a trip back in time to 1982, where another edgy, female-fronted band enjoyed success with a track that also contains the word “never” in the title – Romeo Void’s “Never Say Never.” This is not to say that “Never Go Back” sounds like it came from the 80s. By blending elements of modern metal with timeless punk influences, Butcher Babies have found a formula that works, and a song that stands out as unique on Active Rock radio. Hopefully, more Active Rock programmers will get behind the track in the coming weeks to infuse some spice into their rotations.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
“The Vengeful One” surges to the top of the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart this week as Disturbed passes Shinedown in a battle of heavyweights. Pop Evil and Five Finger Death Punch remain in contention for future top honors at #3 and #4 respectively.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Red Sun Rising continues to impress with “The Otherside,” as the lead single from their debut album reaches the Top 10 this week. Given the strength of established artists this year, it’s an even more impressive feat…
Three songs break into Top 20 this week, led by last week’s high debut track by Foo Fighters (“Outside”)…
Three songs crack the Top 30 section of the chart, led by Asking Alexandria’s “I Won’t Give In,” which seems to be gathering some momentum…
A downright astonishing six songs reach the Top 40 for the first time this week, with Zac Brown Band showing the most strength of the bunch…
An almost equally amazing six songs break into the Top 50 on the latest chart, five of them new to the ranks, along with a re-entry from New Year’s Day.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Disturbed – “The Vengeful One”
Foo Fighters – “Outside”
Bring Me The Horizon – “Throne”
DROPPING DOWN
Halestorm – “Amen”
Mumford & Sons – “The Wolf”
Kill It Kid – “Blood Stop And Run”
FUTURES REPORT
Trends suggest that Disturbed should be able to hold on to the top spot for at least another week, but it seems less certain whether the biggest threat to their reign will be songs that haven’t peaked yet, or if it will come from Shinedown, who slipped to #2 this week, but is still showing strength. With an album release just a couple of weeks away now, don’t completely discount the chances for Five Finger Death Punch to at least remain in the picture. Foo Fighters is also approaching rapidly in the rear view mirror alongside a number of hopeful tracks.
