PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
MOTIONLESS IN WHITE – “Unstoppable”
There are some songs that instantly make you reach for the dial to crank them up when they come on the radio. Motionless In White’s “Unstoppable” definitely falls into that category. From the band’s album, Reincarnate, which had a decent run with the title track, this anthem of defiance and resolve definitely falls on the heavier side of the Active Rock spectrum with its intense, industrial sound, explosive double-bass and raw growls, but it also features enough melodic moments to fit the format. While the track has had modest, but steady gains since making its debut recently, it remains to be seen whether enough programmers will have the balls to add this track into the mix to make a run up the charts. “Unstoppable” will not flow easily into a block of similar sounding songs, and that’s a good thing, because it is the type of track that Active Rock needs to keep its edge.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.
SPIN IT…
NONPOINT – “Misery”
AMARANTHE – “Digital World”
PARKWAY DRIVE – “Vice Grip”
WILSON – “Right To Rise”
SEPTEMBER MOURNING – “Children Of Fate”
DROP IT…
Mumford & Sons – “The Wolf”
The Struts – “Could Have Been Me”
Beck – “Dreams”
Fit For Rivals – “Freak Machine”
The Arcs – “Outta My Mind”
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
So much for that “inevitable” #1 for Halestorm I guess. At least I managed to figure out the biggest threat correctly. A double-digit percentage surge in airplay propelled Shinedown’s “Cut The Cord” to the top of the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart a few weeks ahead of expectations, bypassing not only last week’s #2 song, but also the new #2 by Disturbed as well. Not quite as surprising, but also notable in the upper reaches of the chart, is a sudden jump in airplay for “Footsteps” from Pop Evil.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Despite the shuffling at the top, it’s a second straight week for zero new songs in the Top 10 as radio refuses to let go of aging singles from Breaking Benjamin and Theory Of A Deadman…
Three tracks crack the Top 20 for the first time this week, including one from the aforementioned Breaking Benjamin as well as newcomers Kill It Kid …
Only one newcomer to the Top 30, as Shaman’s Harvest nears the peak of their most recent single with their cover of “Dirty Diana” …
Ghost reaches the Top 40 this week with a nice percentage gain in spins…
Three songs make their Top 50 debut, highlighted by Lamb Of God with “Overlord,” one of the heavier songs to chart in quite a while.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Shinedown – “Cut The Cord”
Red Sun Rising – “The Otherside”
Breaking Benjamin – “Angel’s Fall”
DROPPING DOWN
Royal Blood – “Little Monsters”
Theory Of A Deadman – “Angel”
Breaking Benjamin – “Failure”
FUTURES REPORT
The strong radio response to “Cut The Cord” – number one in just 4 weeks – may set up a long stay at the top, unless Disturbed gets a similar boost for “The Vengeful One” over the next few weeks. There’s also a decent chance that those two frontrunners could swap the top spots for an even longer period.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/

I’m so glad you recognize how awesome “Unstoppable” is by MIW. I love that entire album. I just discovered the band in January & I fell in love with their sound instantly when I heard the title track of “Reincarnate.” I went out and bought the album the very next day, & I’ve been addicted ever since.
