PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
NONPOINT – “Misery”
For the past few HRD Radio Reports, the pick of the week was a new song from an Active Rock staple artist. The same is true this week, but for reasons that defy all logic, “Misery” by Nonpoint has still yet to crack the Top 50, much less make a run for the top slot. While a number of songs that, quite frankly, have no business getting ANY airplay on Active Rock radio, “Misery” languishes outside of the Top 50. Of course, that doesn’t mean that the song isn’t getting any airplay. Quite the contrary! It has been getting solid spins on SiriusXM’s Octane, and has made it’s way onto the Octane Big ‘Uns Countdown. You have to wonder at times if Active Rock programmers resent living the vast shadows cast by Octane, or if Octane is just so far ahead of others when it comes to certain songs. In fact, there are songs that are still rising on the Active Rock chart with significant spin increases that feel like they are close to being phased out on Octane after a lengthy run. Will “Misery” be the next song to fall into this category? It certainly seems possible at this point. Even if Nonpoint wasn’t a staple Active Rock artist, “Misery” is a song that should be steadily climbing the charts, not fighting to crack the Top 50.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.
SPIN IT…
NONPOINT – “Misery”
AMARANTHE – “Digital World”
LAMB OF GOD – “Overload”
ART OF DYING – “Tear Down The Wall”
AWAKEN THE EMPIRE – “Cross My Heart”
DROP IT…
Mumford & Sons – “The Wolf”
The Struts – “Could Have Been Me”
In This Moment – “Sex Metal Barbie”
Beck – “Dreams”
Breaking Benjamin – “Failure”
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Make it two weeks atop the Mediabase Active Rock airplay for Royal Blood as “Little Monster” holds on to enough airplay to stay in place. Halestorm and Disturbed spent the week closing ground, but couldn’t quite make up the difference in airplay before the chart rolled over into a new week. Another object in the rear view mirror is also looming larger, as Shinedown’s new single, “Cut The Cord,” begins to threaten to pass the trio in front.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Zero new songs in the Top 10 this week, just shuffling of the order …
Only one new song enters the Top 20 – “The Otherside” – the impressive debut single from Red Sun Rising …
Only one new song enters the Top 30 as well. “Angel’s Fall,” the next single by Breaking Benjamin, is rising steadily and should be in line for a big boost whenever radio finally let’s go of their previous #1 song…
Trapt returns to the Top 40 thanks to a nearly 50 percent jump in airplay in the past week …
Two songs debut in the Top 50 this week, finally including “I Won’t Give In,” the latest single from Asking Alexandria nearly two months after the song first saw airplay. The reaction has been surprisingly slow considering the band’s last single had a nice run in the Top 10.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Disturbed – “The Vengeful One”
Shinedown – “Cut The Cord”
Breaking Benjamin – “Angel’s Fall”
DROPPING DOWN
Theory Of A Deadman – “Angel”
Breaking Benjamin – “Failure”
Three Days Grace – “Human Race”
FUTURES REPORT
While it appears that a #1 for Halestorm is all but inevitable, an interesting battle to succeed them is shaping up between Disturbed and Shinedown. In a summer that’s been filled with one powerhouse release after another, it could be that the band that reaches the top first will end up with the shorter lifespan for their single. I can’t see either being denied the top spot permanently, although that might turn out to be what happens with another fast mover right behind them. “Footsteps” by Pop Evil needed only two weeks to crack the Top 10, but has already been passed on the chart by both of the previously mentioned songs.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
