PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH – “Jekyll & Hyde”
It wasn’t long ago that a meltdown on stage during a Five Finger Death Punch concert had people speculating that the band would break up. Fast forward a few months, and they’re back with another single that is already climbing the charts, and is likely to battle for the #1 position with other Active Rock heavyweights in the not-too-distant future. Perhaps the stage meltdown was the ultimate “Jekyll & Hyde” moment. No matter, FFDP is back and poised to make their mark once again with new material that will only solidify their place in the upper echelon of modern hard rock artists. Because the band features an instantly recognizable sound, they can “borrow” ideas from others and make it their own. Their 2011 hit song, “The Pride,” was like Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start The Fire” on steroids. Although “Jekyll & Hyde” bears a striking resemblance to “Pepper” by Butthole Surfers at times, there are enough signature FFDP moments to give the song its own personality (or two as the case may be). Active Rock radio programmers have already embraced the debut single from the band’s upcoming release. The only question now is whether it will garner enough support to make it to #1 against some fierce competition.
HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)
Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

KING OF THE HILL
Another week, another new #1 song atop the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart. After some two months with the same number one having two straight weeks with a change seems almost unbelievable, but that’s the case as Royal Blood reaches the top with “Little Monster.” Essentially standing pat on airplay was more than enough for them to get past Breaking Benjamin and Theory Of A Deadman as both of their singles took sharp falls. With a fairly large (nearly 200 spins) gap back to the next song “with a bullet” – Halestorm at #4 – the newcomers could have at least another week to enjoy the view from the top. A bigger question might be whether Disturbed can continue their momentum and reach the top before Halestorm. That’s certainly the direction that things seem to be trending.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
It’s also a second straight week for two new arrivals in the Top 10, with Shinedown moving in and Highly Suspect returning after a brief dip…
Two songs slip into the Top 20 for the first time, singles from Mumford & Sons and The Struts…
Beartooth hits a new high-water mark, moving into the last spot in the Top 30…
A trio of songs crack the Top 40 for the first time this week, led by “Angel’s Fall,” the follow-up single to “Failure” from Breaking Benjamin…
Three songs debut in the Top 50 this week, including “Chemical Ride,” a current Music Discovery Monday selection from 3 Years Hollow.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Disturbed – “The Vengeful One”
Shinedown – “Cut The Cord”
Breaking Benjamin – “Angel’s Fall”
DROPPING DOWN
Theory Of A Deadman – “Angel”
Three Days Grace – “Human Race”
Godsmack – “What’s Next”
FUTURES REPORT
The ascension of Royal Blood to the top of the chart felt somewhat predictable, given that 5 of the top 16 songs in the Alternative chart are getting significant Active Rock airplay and several others are looming. That trend, combined with a strong summer for several of the format’s core artists, continues to make life exceptionally difficult for the numerous airplay- worthy hard rock newcomers who have solid material out right now.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
