PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
FALLING IN REVERSE – “God If You Are Above”
Often times, the pick of the week is a song that is not getting the attention that it deserves from Active Rock radio. Although this song probably won’t reach the level on the chart that it is worthy of, it has gotten solid spins. Let’s just say that the reason it was chosen this week has to do with a sign from above. There is a fascinating backstory to the writing of this song, and the rest of the Falling In Reverse album for that matter, but that will be shared in another feature in the coming weeks on Hard Rock Daddy. “God If You Are Above” is a high-energy track that captures frontman, Ronnie Radke’s torment as he passionately delivers thought-provoking lyrics. Every once in a while, a track seems to plateau on the chart, but then continues to climb slowly. Hopefully, this will be the case for a kick-ass tune that stands out as unique on Active Rock radio.
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
A week of steady growth for “Failure” keeps Breaking Benjamin atop the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart for a second straight week. A virtually flat week with no erosion allows Zac Brown Band (f. Chris Cornell) to remain in the #2 spot with “Heavy Is The Head.” Theory Of A Deadman is a “very distant” #3 with “Angel,” which isn’t an exaggeration. Third place is so far behind the leader at the moment, that even a sudden 50% increase in spins would still not overtake the reigning champion.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Both Temperance Movement and Awolnation crack the Top 10 this week…
New arrivals in the Top 20 include mainstays Seether with “Nobody Praying For Me,” and newcomers Highly Suspect, the latter scoring an impressive debut with “Lydia” …
With all that movement you might think that there’d be a noticeable change in how radio sounded over the past week, but you’d be mistaken. When you look at the Top 30 songs you’ll notice that every song is the exact same as last week; they’ve just been rearranged…
That’s something that will almost certainly change next week as Godsmack strongly leads a trio of songs debuting in (or returning to) to the Top 50 with their latest single, “What’s Next.”
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Breaking Benjamin – “Failure”
Halestorm – “Amen”
Seether – “Nobody Praying For Me”
DROPPING DOWN
Pretty Reckless – “Follow Me Down”
Offspring – “Coming For You”
Foo Fighters – “Congregation”
FUTURES REPORT
Given the continued growth for the current #1 song, and the rather enormous gap back to the next contenders for the top spot, it seems highly likely that the run will continue for at least another week – and possibly several weeks — for Breaking Benjamin. There are several viable contenders to succeed them, but it appears they will all have to patiently wait their turn.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
