PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
SHAMAN’S HARVEST – “Dirty Diana”
Earlier in the year, Shaman’s Harvest made a radio impact with “Dangerous,” the first single off of their latest album, Smokin’ Hearts & Broken Guns. The band showed that they are not afraid to take risks with their follow-up single, “Country As Fuck,” which never gained the momentum that “Dangerous” did. With hard rock cover songs all the rage, Shaman’s Harvest has thrown their hat into the ring with an unexpected, but very cool cover of Michael Jackson’s “Dirty Diana.” Cover versions that are totally different than the original tend to make the biggest impact. If the early returns are any indication, “Dirty Diana” may be the next unique cover to make a radio impact (just as I Prevail did with their version of the Taylor Swift song, “Blank Space”). Shaman’s Harvest has added just the right amount of blues and gritty, southern vocals to a pop/dance song to make it appealing to Active Rock radio fans. It doesn’t hurt that Shaman’s Harvest is one of the most instantly recognizable bands on Active Rock radio today. Here’s hoping that this track follows a path similar to “Dangerous.”
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
What had appeared inevitable for at least a couple of weeks is now official…radio was definitely ready for the return of Breaking Benjamin! Four years since their last hit, and some six years after their last #1 song, the band – with only one original member left – has returned to the top of the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart. Zac Brown Band (f. Chris Cornell) falls back to #2, with Pretty Reckless still holding on to #3 this week, but showing major erosion in airplay. Timing was essentially the difference that denies Taylor Momsen and company a third #1 single, stuck just off the top for nine straight weeks. The next in line for the throne appears to be either Three Days Grace or Royal Blood, but that might be several weeks away from happening.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Yet another week with the exact same songs in the Top 10, but that should change by at least a couple next week …
Also for a second straight week, only a single new entry in the Top 20, where the second single from the new Halestorm album (“Amen”) arrives, even as many stations remain loyal to the first single (“Apocalyptic”)…
Aranda joins Seether in cracking the Top 30 this week…
New to the Top 40 are Crobot and Tremonti …
Once again this week there’s three songs debuting in the lower reaches of the Top 50, including a much lower profile entrance for the third single from the recent AC/DC album (“Rock The Blues Away”).
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Breaking Benjamin – “Failure”
Royal Blood – “Little Monster”
Halestorm – “Amen”
DROPPING DOWN
Pretty Reckless – “Follow Me Down”
Offspring – “Coming For You”
Incubus – “Absolution Calling”
FUTURES REPORT
A potentially interesting scenario looms on the horizon over the next few weeks, as a band that replaced every member except the singer (Breaking Benjamin), might be succeeded at the top of the charts by a band that rather noisily found themselves recently in need of a new singer (Three Days Grace). If both manage to experience similar success in opposite situations, a question might be raised just how much name value / recognition is driving airplay at the moment. Could Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley possibly be correct about the relative importance of individual band members (at least in terms of radio success)?
