THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Twenty-one years after their first U.S. chart success (“Come Out and Play”) Offspring ascends to the top of the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart with their latest hit “Coming For You.” For some perspective on how long ago that was, vocalist Taylor Momsen (of the band Pretty Reckless, who holds the #2 chart position) was not quite a year old yet and #3 Foo Fighters was nearly a year away from playing their first live show together. And, the artist that appears destined for his first rock #1 in the very near future (Zac Brown) was still in high school when we first heard Offspring on the radio. It’s been an impressive career and it doesn’t appear to be anywhere near over.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Two songs arrive into the Top 20 this week, including the latest from Otherwise, which marks their fourth Top 20 single in five tries, quite a solid performance …
Two new arrivals in the Top 30 this week (not sure there are too many more disparate pairings than Apocalyptica and In This Moment)…
Debuting in the Top 50 this week is the latest single from Nothing More (“Jenny”) and the impressively heavy single from the forthcoming Tremonti project (“Another Heart”).
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Zac Brown f. Chris Cornell – “Heavy Is The Head”
Breaking Benjamin – “Failure”
Three Days Grace – “Human Race”
DROPPING DOWN
Foo Fighters – “Congregation”
All That Remains – “This Probably Won’t End Well”
Marilyn Manson – “Deep Six”
JL’s PICK OF THE WEEK
Framing Hanley – “Collide”
A decade after forming in Nashville, TN, the members of Framing Hanley took to social media last week to announce the impending dissolution of the band. A farewell tour will wrap up a career that included three charting singles, a certified Gold single (“Lollipop”) and a pair of albums that cracked the Top 15 in their genre(s). Practical and business concerns, rather than any hint of personal issues, seems to be the reason for the break-up, a sad sign of the times perhaps. Their departure is duly noted, with best wishes for whatever the future holds.
FUTURES REPORT
An interesting race for the top shapes up for next week as radio tries to decide whether to keep Offspring in place, allow Pretty Reckless to score another #1 or to move on from both and anoint Zac Brown. I won’t even begin to attempt a prediction.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
