For the legion of Alter Bridge fans around the world, the three-year cycle between albums can seem like an eternity. The silver lining is the music that comes out from the band members’ various side projects, the latest one being Tremonti’s second album, Cauterize, which will be released in June. Ahead of the album release, the band has just released the first single, entitled “Another Heart.”
Mark Tremonti has gotten a tremendous amount of well-earned acclaim for his guitar work, which shines as usual on “Another Heart.” Adding to the intrigue of Tremonti is the fact his vocals are front and center, unlike Alter Bridge where they usually take a back seat to frontman, Myles Kennedy.
“Another Heart” not only showcases Tremonti’s vocal ability, but also a powerful group of dynamic musicians who have the ability to seamlessly blend melody and speed. Featuring Wolfgang Van Halen (bass), Garrett Whitlock (drums) and Eric Friedman (rhythm guitar), Tremonti is a force to be reckoned with in its own right, not just a side project to fill the void between Alter Bridge albums.
In an interview with Mark Tremonti around the time of the release of Fortress, he talked about the benefits of Alter Bridge’s various side projects, most notably how challenging yourself to go and tackle something new results in a renewed sense of excitement when the band regroups to record. He also talked about his passion for speed metal and the bands that influenced him like Slayer, Metallica and Celtic Frost.
With “Another Heart,” Tremonti’s passion for speed metal is readily apparent, but he uses it to complement (rather than replace) the sound that Alter Bridge fans have grown accustomed to throughout the band’s history.
“Another Heart” is a nice introduction to Tremonti and his band. The good news for Tremonti fans is that they won’t have to wait long for more new material. The band recorded enough songs for another full album, which Tremonti says is the second part of a two-part album. Dust (the follow-up album to Cauterize) will be released sometime in 2016.
