GUESTS: Dave Lombardo and John 5
MUSICAL GUEST: John 5
John 5 talked about everything that he is working on:
- Solo album called “Careful With That Axe”
- Film score for a new Rob Zombie film called 31.
- Just finished recording a new Rob Zombie record.
- A new live Rob Zombie record is coming out that has absolutely no overdubs!
- A record with David Lee Roth that started out as two friends hanging out and writing and turned into an album.
In addition to everything that he’s been working on, John 5 discussed playing live instrumental shows. He was very apprehensive to do it at firest, but Zombie was very supportive and encouraged him to do it.
GUEST: Dave Lombardo (Philm, ex-Slayer)
Lombardo was showered with praise from the guys when he sat down to talk, but was very humble about his accomplishments. He talked about his influences (Bill Ward, Ginger Baker and John Bonham). He learned to play drums on his own by teaching himself “100,000 Years” off of KISS Alive I.
When asked how he transitioned to the type of drummer that he is based on his beginnings, Lombardo said that he had a ton of energy when he started Slayer when he was around 16-yrs old. He also credited a punk influence that Jeff Hanneman brought to the table.
Lombardo revealed that he never warms up before a show, because he would be too exhausted. He feels that his nightly shows are his warm-ups. Whereas many drummers start to wear down as they age, Lombardo (who just turned 50) says that he feels great. There is something to be said for not warming up.
When asked about the possibility of returning to Slayer for a fourth time, Lombardo said… “let’s just say that if you ever see me on stage with Slayer again, you’ll know that everything is resolved.”
Although he is now playing much smaller venues with his new band (Philm), he is really enjoying the freedom that comes with being the leader of this trio. He also said that the feeling that he gets when he is on stage is the same regardless of whether the venue is big or small.
TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT: Artists playing in numerous side projects
JIM – Take it. He feels that artists can’t be as creative in their main band, so side projects offer a creative outlet.
DON – Take it (to a degree). He said that he will follow the main band and ONE side band only, especially because you don’t know how long they will last.
EDDIE – Take it (very reluctantly). Like Don, he doesn’t mind one side project, but doesn’t like the supergroups that come and go without ever playing a live show. He feels that it builds up fan expectations, but never delivers.
