PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
SEASONS AFTER – “Lights Out”
What do you do when you are handcuffed by a dispute with your record label and forced into hiatus? The answer for many bands would be to pack it in and pursue other projects. In fact, in today’s climate, many artists choose to partake in several projects rather than committing 100% of their effort to a single band. Seasons After proves that the saying “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” is not just lip service. Instead of packing it in when they faced a sizable obstacle, the band channeled their energy into telling their story through their lyrics. Following up their debut single “So Long Goodbye” off of their latest album Calamity, Scars & Memoirs, the band is back with another outstanding track that should be a mainstay on Active Rock radio with “Lights Out.” The song is starting to get some traction on SiriusXM’s Octane, and by all rights, should be regularly featured on the Big ‘Uns Countdown. Active Rock programmers would be wise to add this track into their rotation to infuse their playlist with a fresh sound that is loaded with melodic intensity.

KING OF THE HILL
Three Days Grace reaches five weeks atop the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart with “I Am Machine,” but the end of their reign may be approaching. Papa Roach has reached the #2 spot with “Face Everything And Rise” and is closing the gap considerably, while Halestorm is also gaining on them from the #3 position with “Apocalyptic.”
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
The Top 10 songs remained unchanged this week (aside from a bit of shuffling in the order), but that almost certainly won’t be the case next week with at least three singles trending sharply downward and likely on their way down (or even off) of the chart …
Little change this week in the 11-30 region of the chart as well, with only two songs climbing into a new tier. Small gains for We Are Harlot and Thousand Foot Krutch lift them to another benchmark…
Strong debut for U.K. rockers Temperance Movement, arriving at #33 this week, well ahead of four other songs that debut well down in the 40s…
Notable this week is how relatively few spins it took to enter the Top 50 (barely more than half what it took just a few months ago). Combined with the spin totals in the higher elevations of the chart, the indication is that radio playlists are currently narrowed a bit in terms of which songs receive heavier airplay, while stations across the country are considerably more divided on which songs are added into light rotation at all.

JL’s PICK OF THE WEEK
BRIDGE TO GRACE – “Bitch”
There’s something to be said for a song that leaves no question where the protagonist stands. On the latest single from this Atlanta band, the only thing that might have made it any clearer would have been to include the phrase that ends “… and the horse you rode in on.” One of the brightest new acts on the active rock scene, it feels more and more like a matter of time before these guys break all the way through, similar perhaps to the way that Pop Evil did in the past few years. David Garcia is one of the most charismatic frontmen to come along in quite a while. Alex Cabrera is on par with any young guitarist out there, and Christian Lowenstein & Justin Little more than hold up their end of the bargain. I’m guessing that the inspiration for this particular song may not be invited to the party however.
FUTURES REPORT
Next week we’ll watch for change at the top of the charts, and see which songs currently in the lower echelon of airplay can build momentum and make significant inroads.
