PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
CAGE9 – “Illuminator”
It’s always challenging for emerging artists to carve out their piece of the pie when it comes to radio airplay. It can easily be argued that there are many emerging artists whose songs are an infinitely better fit for Active Rock radio than a number of songs that simply don’t fit the format at all. Although Cage9 definitely fits into the emerging artist category, they do have the advantage of a high-profile connection with Evan Rodaniche fronting the band. Known by Powerman 5000 fans as Evan9 for his guitar work with the band, Rodaniche proves on “Illuminator” that he is equally as talented as a vocalist. Hopefully, the Powerman 5000 connection will pique the interest of Active Rock radio programmers enough to give “Illuminator” a chance. This is a killer track that would stand out on any playlist. For the sake of listeners everywhere, one can only hope that programmers “see the light” and give “Illuminator” the spins that it richly deserves!
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Three Days Grace extends the run at the top to four weeks for “I Am Machine” on the latest Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart. Despite having hit the apparent peak of spins, their stay could be longer, as the #2 song from Seether, “Same Damn Life,” suffered a noticeable decline in airplay. The gap to Papa Roach’s “Face Everything And Rise” at #3 remains fairly large, and would require an almost coordinated effort to push them ahead in a single week.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Sixx A.M. enters the Top 10 with “Stars,” their most successful song at radio in nearly four years, going back to “This Is Gonna Hurt” in 2011 …
Slash f. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators break into the Top 20 this week with “Bent To Fly,” but there’s still a long way to go if they are to extend their streak of Top 10 singles to five …
Three new entries in the Top 50 this week, led by Theory Of A Deadman with “Angel”…
Interpret it how you will, but this week’s “active rock” Top 50 includes 12 songs – effectively 1/4th of the airplay chart – that are also in the Top 50 on the Alternative chart. With the exception of Three Days Grace and Seether, the remaining artists are not immediately identifiable as being Active Rock, so the matter in which genre is influencing the other seems fairly obvious.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN

JL’s PICK OF THE WEEK
THOUSAND FOOT KRUTCH – “Untraveled Road”
It’s been more than a decade since these Christian rap-rockers broke into the mainstream rock chart, and in that time, few similar artists have been as successful at integrating their signature sound across multiple platforms. From video games to sports telecasts, the band has developed a knack for popping up in places that you wouldn’t necessarily have expected. Somewhere along the way, instead of being a surprise, they’ve become a fixture. The second single from their latest album, OXYGEN:INHALE, gives the band their fifth rock chart appearance in three years. It’s a perfect example of why TFK has become one of the genre’s most reliable radio bands, with Trevor McNevan’s distinctive vocal leading the way.
FUTURES REPORT
Next week, we’ll see if Three Days Grace extends their streak at the top, if Halestorm can overtake a couple of heavyweights that stand between them and another #1, and whether the sanity slowly begins to creep back into the process that determines what songs are added to the playlist, or if the descent into the madness of mediocrity continues.
