PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
REVOLVE – “Stranded”
2015 has arrived, but radio is still 2014 mode (as you can see from the lack of chart movement). New releases will be dropping in the coming weeks, which is something to look forward to for fans of Active Rock radio. One release that you should definitely keep on your radar is the upcoming debut EP from Baltimore’s own, Revolve. “Stranded” is tailor-made for Active Rock radio, and if programmers are keeping their eye on the ball, this song should be hitting the airwaves sooner rather than later. Produced by Clint Lowery, this track will definitely appeal to Sevendust fans, and also to fans of bands like Shinedown and Breaking Benjamin. To learn more about the band and the song, check out the interview with guitarist, Debbie Barlow, that was featured on Music Discovery Monday. “Stranded” was also featured on Hard Rock Daddy’s TOP 100 HARD ROCK SONGS OF 2014.
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Meet the new #1, same as the old #1. “Wrong Side Of Heaven” from Five Finger Death Punch climbs back atop the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart to begin the new year, with extremely modest growth pushing them past the even more stable spins of Foo Fighters’ “Something From Nothing.” This is the tenth straight week with the same songs taking the top two spots.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
The repeat #1 scenario for Five Finger Death Punch is nothing new; the same thing happened to start 2014 when “Battle Born” returned to the top for a week after “Deal With The Devil” by Pop Evil interrupted their first stay for three weeks in December … One song debuts on the chart this week, as Hinder arrives with “Hit The Ground” … Sitting just outside the Top 50, it it looks like radio may give a warm welcome to the forthcoming single from All That Remains, getting early airplay despite virtually no other playlist additions for anything else.
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Five Finger Death Punch – “Wrong Side Of Heaven”
Godsmack – “Something Different”
Bring Me The Horizon – “Drown”
DROPPING DOWN
Three Days Grace – “I Am Machine”
Chevelle – “An Island”
Linkin Park f. Daron Malakian – “Rebellion”
JL’s PICK OF THE WEEK
HINDER – “Hit The Ground”
Lead singer departs, band finds replacement, band produces a strong effort in their first release after the changes. If that’s a trend, then it’s a good one. Nolan Neal proves himself equal to the task on the band’s first single from their forthcoming album When The Smoke Clears, delivering the goods without any real sense that anything is missing.
I CALL B#LL$HIT!
2015 begins with the same quartet of songs wasting space on the Active Rock chart that littered the chart to close 2014. Fall Out Boy, Black Keys, Smashing Pumpkins and Arctic Monkeys tied up just over 1,000 spins in the past week. That’s enough spins do give at least four, (if not more) other actual ACTIVE ROCK songs a chance to perform.. What a concept!
FUTURES REPORT
In the next HRD Radio Report, we’ll see if radio decision-makers are actually ready to go back to work after taking most of a month off.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week. Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
