THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
After waiting six weeks to finally pass Foo Fighters, “Wrong Side Of Heaven” by Five Finger Death Punch is the beneficiary of an extremely stable week on the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart, and remains in the top spot for the second consecutive week. No song in the top ten experienced more than 3% growth or loss this week, as playlists were almost (but not quite) frozen with the holidays approaching, and a number of promotion companies taking time off.
NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT
Nice movement for The Pretty Reckless this week, which stands out even more than usual because of the slowdown…
Only two songs debuting on the chart again this week…most notably a good reception for “Deep Six,” the second track to be unveiled from the forthcoming Marilyn Manson album. The first track was a down-tempo track that really didn’t generate much buzz. “Deep Six” is more upbeat, and is clearly what radio wants from MM …
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Pretty Reckless – “Follow Me Down”
AC/DC – “Rock Or Bust”
Marilyn Manson – “Deep Six”
DROPPING DOWN
Nonpoint – “Breaking Skin”
Thousand Foot Krutch – “Born This Way”
Mastodon – “The Motherload”
JL’s PICK OF THE WEEK
ROCK SUGAR – “Don’t Stop The Santa Man”
Take a mashup, then alter the lyrics completely, assigning the task to some of the most creative minds in the entire rock universe. The combination produces a definite holiday rock classic, one that’s “singable” and familiar, while being unique enough to guarantee a smile from all but the Scroogiest fans. The song isn’t actually “new” per se; the band has performed it seasonally for at least a couple of years now, but it seems to have generated more interest and attention this year. Definitely one of the most memorable and enjoyable listens of the winter for me.
I CALL B#LL$HIT!
Sigh. Fall Out Boy rises – like steam from a pile – among the list of four songs that have no business whatsoever being inflicted upon active rock radio listeners. Black Keys, Smashing Pumpkins and Arctic Monkeys also all remain among the most played tracks this week, back up to wasting almost 1,000 spins that could be better used for any of dozens of actual rock songs (or commercials, or static, or dead air). It is what it is, but it’s still worth calling out the industry for the mistakes that are being made.
FUTURES REPORT
In the next HRD Radio Report, we’ll see the final chart of 2014 and look eagerly ahead to the first chart of 2015. Hope you all have a merry and happy week! Your kind attention as readers is definitely present enough for me this year … I hardly ever wear ties anyway.
