PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
HINDER – “Hit The Ground”
A year after the surprising departure of frontman, Austin Winkler, Hinder is back with Nolan Neal at the helm. While the two have different vocal styles, the one thing that they have in common in an incredible flair for delivering melodic tracks with big hooks and catchy choruses. Many Hinder fans were worried that Winkler’s departure would mark the end of the road for these Oklahoma rockers, but the band’s first single with Neal proves that they are more than ready to “hit the ground” running when their album drops in 2015.
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
KING OF THE HILL
Foo Fighters have spent six weeks atop the Active Rock chart with “Something From Nothing,” but it looks like this could be their final week at #1.
Five Finger Death Punch looks poised to claim the top spot with “Wrong Side Of Heaven,” but it’s possible that programmers may opt to push Royal Blood’s “Figure It Out” to the top instead.
Also, keep an eye on Seether as the potential “king of the hill” with their latest single, “Same Damn Life.”
NOTABLE CHART ACTION
Hellyeah has their biggest radio hit in four years with “Moth” cracking the Top 10…
Nickelback picks up speed quickly with “Million Miles An Hour” getting ready to zoom past “Edge Of A Revolution” (the first single off of their latest album, No Fixed Address)…
Linkin Park has the highest of three debuting songs this week with “Final Masquerade.” It sure would be interesting to know whether their label/management decided to effectively kill the band’s previous single (“Rebellion”) after just six weeks on the chart, or if radio insisted on calling an audible …
The title track from the new AC/DC album, “Rock Or Bust,” enters the Top 50 this week, but without anywhere near the fanfare enjoyed by the album’s first single, “Play Ball.”
THREE UP & THREE DOWN
MOVING UP
Papa Roach – “Face Everything And Rise”
Pretty Reckless – “Follow Me Down”
Linkin Park – “Final Masquerade”
DROPPING DOWN
Slipknot – “The Devil In I”
AC/DC – “Play Ball”
Volbeat – “Doc Holliday”
JL’s PICK OF THE WEEK
GUS G. (Featuring ALEXIA RODRIGUEZ) – “Break Away”
The latest in a succession of strong songs from this Greek guitar hero might just be his best of the year. While he’s better known to many simply as “Ozzy’s guitar player,” this is a song that hits the Active Rock niche nicely (thanks in no small part to a stellar performance by guest vocalist, Alexia Rodriguez, of Eyes Set To Kill). I wouldn’t have necessarily predicted the combination as one that would work, but this exceeded all expectations I had for the track.
I CALL B#LL$HIT!
Five decidedly not-active-rock tracks from a week ago are reduced to four as Death From Above 1979 mercifully departs from the chart. That still leaves Black Keys, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins and Arctic Monkeys wasting roughly 1,000 spins – the equivalent of a top ten song – that could be much better spent elsewhere on something that fits the format.
FUTURES REPORT
In the next HRD Radio Report, we’ll look to see how radio resolved the question at the top of the chart, find out if any existing songs on the chart suddenly get a substantial increase in airplay (something we really haven’t seen happen a lot lately), and see if any songs takes advantage of the slowdown in releases that often comes as the holidays approach.
WRAP-UP
That’s all for this week! Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report. \m/
