PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
BOBAFLEX – “Never Coming Back”
Each week, as I comb over the Top 50 Active Rock songs, I find myself wondering what programmers hear that I don’t (and vice versa). While there are a number of great songs on the chart in any given week, there are also many that couldn’t hold a candle to my pick of the week – “Never Coming Back” – the follow-up single to Bobaflex’s dark, melodic rocker, “I’m Glad You’re Dead.”
Active Rock should be all over this track, but whether or not they give Bobaflex the respect that they deserve, remains to be seen. If you love great hard rock, and have an appreciation for bands with a sense of humor and nostalgia, make sure to watch the video for “Never Coming Back” (below)…
THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless
Time to see what’s cooking on the Thanksgiving week edition of the HRD Radio Report, as we find out who is feasting on airplay, who has been banished to the kid’s table and what I’ve picked for a tasty dessert this week.
CHART TOPPERS
Five weeks and counting…the Foo Fighters “Something From Nothing” remains at #1 on the Mediabase Active Rock airplay chart. They did slip back just a bit, allowing “Wrong Side Of Heaven” by Five Finger Death Punch to cut the gap in half while staying at #2. Royal Blood surges to #3 with “Figure It Out,” while Slipknot falls back to #4 as “The Devil In I” remains essentially flat in spins. Seether holds on to the #5 spot with “Same Damn Life,” but Three Days Grace appears poised to overtake them if “I Am Machine” maintains its momentum.
CHART HIGHLIGHTS
While the top eleven songs in the chart remain the same (with only a few changes in the order), there were a few songs making notable progress this week, including the latest from In This Moment, who move up four spots to #12 with “Sick Like Me.” Papa Roach also jumped up four spots with“Face Everything And Rise” (which now sits at #16), Starset’s sophomore single “Carnivore” moves up five places to #26, and there are nine place improvements for both “Tragedy + Time” by Rise Against (#35) and “Drown” from Bring Me The Horizon (#40).
Three new songs break into the Top 50 this week, with the highest debut belonging to Pretty Reckless with “Follow Me Down” (which lands at #34). Other arrivals include “Million Miles An Hour,” the second single off of Nickelback’s latest album (premiering at #45), and Slash’s “Bent To Fly,” which comes in at #47. .

Royal Blood – “Figure It Out” (+211 spins, +14% airplay)
Three Days Grace – “I Am Machine” (+132 spins, +10% airplay)
FALLING
Otherwise “Darker Side Of The Moon” (-166 spins, -60% airplay)
Death From Above 1979 “Trainwreck 1979” (-154 spins, -57% airplay)
Black Keys “Gotta Get Away” (-220 spins, -30% airplay)
Nickelback “Edge Of A Revolution” (-145 spins, -22% airplay)
Volbeat “Doc Holliday” (-87 spins, -8% airplay)
JL’s PICK OF THE WEEK
GLORIOUS SONS – “Heavy”
Strong songs can be found in places beyond the Mediabase Active Rock Top 50. In this case, it’s a hit from the Canadian version of the Active Rock chart. This straight up rocker has performed well for the past three months or so. While every song from the band may not bring quite this much to the table, taken on its own merits, this is a track that U.S. programmers looking to broaden their horizons should have taken notice of immediately; it’s just that good. One of the best songs of the second half of 2014, with a smart, well-shot video that just adds value, this is a “heavy” track.
I CALL B#LL$HIT!
Seven B.S. tracks last week have been reduced to five this week as Kongos and Fall Out Boy both “fall out” of the Top 50 (finally!). That’s progress, as is the reduced amount of airplay invested in songs that aren’t remotely Active Rock (Weezer, Black Keys, Death From Above 1979, Smashing Pumpkins and Arctic Monkeys). Still, having over 1,300 spins wasted on this sort of B.S. is an ongoing concern.
FUTURES REPORT
In the next HRD Radio Report – assuming we’ve all recovered from the Thanksgiving bounty – we’ll see how the narrowing battle for the top spot on the Active Rock chart shapes up, and see whether Papa Roach and Nickelback will continue the trend of swiftly moving singles. Lastly, we’ll keep an eye out for the possible debut of a new song from AC/DC. Until then, Happy Thanksgiving to all those celebrating the holiday!
WRAP-UP
