PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK
Once again, I am completely baffled by the Top 50 including songs that have no place on Active Rock Radio (see I CALL B#LL$SHIT! below), and omitting a track that should be flying up the charts – “Revolution” by The Used. Octane is giving some love to this blood-pumping, fist-in-the-air, hard rock anthem, but they are not getting the attention that they deserve from Active Rock Radio. It’s time to start a “Revolution” to get The Used climbing up the chart and getting rid of the rubbish that doesn’t belong at all!
AS PREDICTED LAST WEEK…
“Mr. MTV” was just released, so look for Nothing More to make another big run before the year ends.”
The track jumped from #65 all the way to #49 this week.
“Within the next week or two, there is no doubt that “Wrong Side Of Heaven” is going to crack the Top 10.”
The track jumped from #17 to #12, and will be in the Top 10 next week.
WHERE’S BAM-BAM?
There have been reports of sightings of a guy wearing a red & white striped shirt with matching hat somewhere in the south. Is it Bam-Bam? We’ll keep you posted!
FREE AGENT SIGNING – JON’S THREE CENTS!
With Bam-Bam still M.I.A., the decision was made to bring in a free agent to help breakdown this week’s Active Rock Radio Chart. “Moneyball” fans will appreciate the analytical, Sabermetrics-esque approach that Jon brings to the table as he shares his three cents…
JON’S THREE CENTS
Now batting … for Craig “Bam-Bam” Stegall…Jon’s Three Cents {echo … echo … echo}
Spring training is one thing, but coming in as a street free agent to pinch-hit in the majors is a whole different matter. {Note to self…“just try to make contact, have a quality at-bat, you can do this.”}
CHART TOPPERS
No surprise at the top of the Mediabase Active Rock Chart this week, as The Pretty Reckless holds the top spot for a third straight week on essentially flat spins. Things heat up in the next three slots, where Slash edges Nickelback for runner-up by just 6 spins, and You Me At Six is less than a hundred spins behind them in the #4 slot. All three songs had solid airplay gains this week, and any could find themselves at number one … that is, if a certain blonde bombshell is ever willing to give up the spot.
CHART HIGHLIGHTS
Only two songs broke into the Top 50 this week, and both of them were sort of competing against themselves. “Something Different” from exploded from #75 all the way to #38, gaining nearly 200 spins. That’s almost the exact number of plays that “1000 HP” lost while falling from #13 to #16.
Possible Newcomers of the Year, Nothing More, have their second Top 50 hit as “Mr. MTV” moves from #64 to #49 this week, while their smash debut single, “This Is the Time (Ballast)” slips a little bit from #6 to #9. It’s clear that their label is pushing to get radio behind the band’s latest single, and they’re likely to get plenty of cooperation on that front.
RAPID RISERS & FREEFALLERS
While the Top 50 might seem a little stagnant this week with only two entries and two exits, there were some songs seeing notable spins movement.
Five Finger Death Punch’s “Wrong Side Of Heaven” increased spins by over 32%, moving up from #17 to #12, while their co-headline tour partners, Volbeat, saw a 28% increase in spins with their latest single, “Doc Holliday,” jumping all the way from #29 to #19.
Seether’s latest single – “Samn Damn Life” – saw a 68% increase in spins, climbing from #37 to #27. Clearly, Active Rock Radio has moved on in a big way on the Seether front, given that “Words As Weapons” dropped out of the Top 50 entirely from the #12 slot last week.
Other songs that have peaked and started to drop include: “My Demons” (Starset), “I Don’t Wanna Be Here” (Rise Against) and “Hunter Eats Hunter” (Chevelle). It also looks like the singles from Crobot, Framing Hanley and Skillet have run out of steam, so there could be quite a few debuts and re-entries next week.
THREE TO WATCH
With an awful lot of good music out there right now, it is nearly impossible to pick out just three for special attention, but it’s probably best if I don’t let myself get too carried away in my first trip to the plate (just make contact, breathe, eye on the ball).
Seeing “For Life” from Three Years Hollow slip out of the Top 50 this week is just a temporary aberration caused by the overall lack of position changes in the chart. This hardworking band from the Midwest has the talent to become regular contenders on the Active Rock Radio chart. It’s up to radio to finally give them the respect that they deserve. This song could easily be “the one.” The production and vocal contribution by Sevendust’s Clint Lowery ought to make this a no-brainer to not only add, but to push.
I’m a little surprised we didn’t see more action this week on the latest single from Theory Of A Deadman – “Savages” – which features the legendary Alice Cooper. Octane is starting to move on this track already, and terrestrial radio needs to jump in the pool and join them.
I keep watching and waiting for Active Rock Racio to wake up to “Rockstar’s Girlfriend” by Pistol Day Parade. It’s a fun song, with just the right amount of attitude to make a good addition to any rotation right now. Surprisingly, the typically slow-to-react Mainstream Rock chart picked up on this one more than two months ago; it’s been a steady performer ever since then. Active Rock Radio stations should be a little embarrassed that they didn’t grab this one and make it their own.
I CALL B#LL$HIT!
This section of the HRD Radio Report is right in my wheelhouse! My B.S. detector is an extremely sensitive, high-end prototype with a high confidence rating. In addition to the previously identified non-active-rock songs from Weezer, Black Keys, Death From Above 1979 and Fall Out Boy, this week, I’ve also detected a certain strong odor emanating from Kongo’s “I’m Only Joking.” There are a few other tracks that seem like fertilizer to me as well, but you can only stack sh…er…stuff so high, so I’ll just toss the foulest one onto the pile for now.
FUTURES REPORT
The most interesting thing to watch next week is seeing how Active Rock Radio reacts to the official “going for adds” week for the first single from the forthcoming Black Veil Brides album – “Heart Of Fire” (see Hard Rock Daddy review). The song is already burning up Octane. How quickly will terrestrial radio follow? Other notables that could start seeing action include: Rev Theory (“Born 2 Destroy”), Saving Abel (“Blood Stained Revolution”) and Three Days Grace (“I Am Machine”).
WRAP-UP
Hopefully I managed to advance the runner with some timely pinch-hitting. If you’d like to see me take a few more swings, visit Jon’s Three Cents.

SPECIAL HARD ROCK DADDY ANNOUNCEMENTS
Keeping with the baseball analogies, we’re going into extra innings this week with some special Hard Rock Daddy announcements.
In commemoration of National Bullying Prevention Month, Hard Rock Daddy will be featuring a month-long spotlight on artists who support the cause with anti-bullying songs, the stories behind those songs, personal childhood bullying experiences and more!
Finally, a new feature is going to be launched in November on Hard Rock Daddy that will expose our readers to songs and artists that don’t get the attention that they deserve from radio. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks!

Thanks for the suggestion last week about Charm City Devils “Shots.” It is a great song. I love exploring for new or up and coming artists. Love that part of your post. I agree there are a few bands that have been on the list that made me also scratch my head in confusion. Anyway, thanks for your posts.
If you have a moment, there is a band from NC called A Course of Action. The lead singer has an amazing voice, plus I am partial to them because they are from NC where I live. Thanks again for your diligent posts and witty commentaries.
