PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK
There is a glaring omission from this week’s Top 50 Active Rock Chart – “Shots” by Charm City Devils, a kickass song that Active Rock radio SHOULD be jumping all over!
When discussing the track this week with frontman, John Allen, he told me that “the song may sound like it’s an all-out call to get fucked up, but the lyrics are really an open letter to a close friend, begging him to get help with his addictions.”
Ahead of the release of the band’s third album – Battles – which dropped today, the boys from Baltimore have been tearing it up as the opening act for Slash featuring Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators. (see Charm City Devils concert review).
“Shots” is even better when performed live, so make sure not to miss CCD when they come storming through your town!
CHART TOPPERS
The Pretty Reckless remained at the top of the chart with “Messed Up World” by a fairly large margin. “World On Fire,” the title track off of Slash’s latest album shot up to #2 this week. The band has been getting a ton of hype on SiriusXM during “Slash Week.” It would be great to see “World On Fire” rise to #1, because it is a killer track from one of the best hard rock albums in recent memory (see album review). You Me At Six rounds out the top 3 with “Room To Breathe,” just 14 spins shy of the #2 position, giving Slash very little “room to breathe.”
CHART HIGHLIGHTS
Linkin Park’s “Until It’s Gone” is falling hard after climbing to the #1 position for a one-week stint. The song had the biggest drop out of all of the songs in the Top 50. If it keeps dropping at this pace, it won’t be long “until it’s gone” from the Top 50 altogether.
Also falling fast is Nothing More’s “This Is The Time (Ballast).” Clearly, the song has run its course, but the second single, “Mr. MTV” was just released, so look for Nothing More to make another big run before the year ends.
As predicted last week, Nickelback has cracked the Top 5 with “Edge Of A Revolution.” The band has more than their fair share of detractors, but Active Rock Radio loves them. Another week like this one, and they will climb all the way to #2, with a realistic shot at #1 in the coming weeks.
CHART CLIMBER
Five Finger Death Punch picked up an incredible 264 spins this week (an over 50% increase) and moved from #23 all the way to #17. Within the next week or two, there is no doubt that “Wrong Side Of Heaven” is going to crack the Top 10. Aside from the military-appreciation tie-in, the song is a true standout track. The only surprise with this one is that it wasn’t released as a single much earlier.
I CALL B#LL$HIT!
Mercilessly, Weezer seems to have peaked, although seeing them in the Top 10 is still very disturbing. Black Keys are still hanging around, but don’t look like a threat to move much higher (thankfully). Death From Above 1979 and Fall Out Boy continue to bewilder with added spins. We can only hope that the powers that be come to their senses and start adding tracks like Charm City Devils’ “Shots,” and stop adding songs that have no place on Active Rock Radio.
