FROM THE HRD PUBLISHER’S DESK
OCTANE BIG ‘UNS COUNTDOWN
Some interesting movement this week on the Active Rock Radio Charts (see below). This week also saw some radical movement on the SiriusXM Big ‘Uns Countdown that left me scratching my head. By and large, the countdown doesn’t usually have big shakeups, but every once in a while, there are major changes that make you wonder how much influence the Octane Air Force really has in deciding the top songs of the week.
The most glaring example of this is Nothing More’s “This Is The Time (Ballast).” The song dominated the charts for the past four months, topping the countdown for 12 out of 15 weeks, and then all of a sudden, it just dropped off altogether. Are we really expected to believe that the Octane Air Force (made up of listeners) all decided in the same week that they were tired of the song that was their favorite for 12 weeks? I guess the band didn’t have another single ready to go like Seether, whose mainstay on the countdown (“Words As Weapons”) was replaced by “Same Damn Life.” This is not a judgment of Seether at all. “Same Damn Life” is a great song, but it’s a little strange that Octane just replaced singles on the countdown like they were changing a roll of toilet paper. Food for thought….
PICK OF THE WEEK – THE FAMILY RUIN
One of the goals for Hard Rock Daddy and the HRD Radio Report is to expose our readers to bands that aren’t charting yet. For my first pick of the week, I have chosen The Family Ruin. They have a killer track entitled “Let’s Go” that will be featured on their upcoming debut album. Check out the Hard Rock Daddy review to hear the song, and see how this band is “related” to Asking Alexandria.
SLASH featuring MYLES KENNEDY & THE CONSPIRATORS
The band’s second album together – World On Fire – dropped today. In celebration of the release, Octane has dubbed this week “Slash Week.” A live concert performance for a small crowd in NYC aired yesterday on Octane. Listening to a concert on the radio is never as good as being there in person, but it was a very cool listening experience just the same. The set was very similar to the one that the band has been playing on their recent dates. Check out the Hard Rock Daddy concert review for more details about the performance.
CHART TOPPERS
Ok, I know that we’re all about hard rock here, but I couldn’t help but think of one of my favorite Biggie lyrics from “Kick In The Door” after seeing Linkin Park dethroned by The Pretty Reckless after just one week…“your reign on the top was short like leprechauns!” Linkin Park and Nothing More stayed in the Top 3, and with their album dropping today, Slash featuring Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators shot up to the #4 slot with “World On Fire.” Is this bump release-driven or is the song about to make a serious run towards the top of the chart? Time will tell…
CHART HIGHLIGHTS
Good news and bad news for Seether fans. Bad news is that “Words As Weapons” has hit its peak. The song dropped from #6 to #10 this week. But the good news is that their latest single off of Isolate & Medicate – “Same Damn Life” – rocketed from #285 all the way to #50. Look for these to tracks to cross paths in the coming weeks. Like cream in the coffee, Seether always seems to rise to the top of the Active Rock Radio charts, and for good reason.
Like Seether, Volbeat is Active Rock Radio royalty. You have to wonder which will happen first…Volbeat releasing a new album or every song from Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies being released as a single that shoots up the charts. Their latest single, “Doc Holliday” jumped from #42 to #33 this week, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this enter the Top 20 in the next week or so.
As Bam-Bam predicted, Nickelback’s “Edge Of A Revolution” has legs. Chad Kroeger and the boys once again will have the last laugh as the haters complain about another one of their songs becoming a mainstay on Active Rock Radio. The song has already cracked the Top 10 and looks to be on a clear path into the Top 5.
CHART CLIMBER
Some major moves happened this week that are worth noting. One move has to be acknowledged, but we’ll save it for the “I CALL B#LL$HIT!” section. On a positive note, In This Moment shot up the charts from #120 to #43 with their latest single, “Sick Like Me.” an intense, yet trippy rocker with an interesting video that may cause seizures in some and nightmares in others. There was another chart climber that won’t excite hard rock fans, but doesn’t quite fit into the “I CALL B#LL$HIT!” category. You can figure this one out by looking at the numbers.
“I CALL B#LLSHIT!”
The only “good news” this week is that Black Keys seems to have leveled off. Now for the bad news…
Weezer continues to climb up the charts and now sits in the #7 slot, and Death From Above 1979 jumped up 3 slots to the #30 position. While these moves are bad, they pale by comparison to the biggest riser in the ICB bunch….
Fall Out Boy shot all the way up to the #42 position in their first week on the chart, which begs the question, is Bam-Bam really on the road, or did his head actually explode like a Saturday morning cartoon character when he saw this Active Rock Radio travesty? Tune in next week to find out. I’m predicting a rant of epic proportions!
