BAM-BAM’S BREAKDOWN
By Craig “Bam-Bam” Stegall
Well, well, well…as we look at our Top 50 Active Rock spinners at commercial radio for the week ending August 17th 2014, it’s clear that exciting new hard rock bands are making a solid run at the crown.
CHART TOPPERS:
Nothing More has been the favorite hard rock band of every fan and critic this year! (see HRD album review).
As a new band, they are getting their start in small clubs and woodsheds, but that hasn’t stopped “This Is The Time (Ballast)” from dominating the Active Rock radio charts. Watching them take down Godsmack (the reigning Active Rock radio champions) has been some award-winning theatrics.
By over 100 spins, the freshman foursome has done something that has rarely been done since Korn rocketed up the Billboard charts in the early 90s! Nothing More’s self-titled debut release is my personal favorite to be named “Best Album Of 2014.”
Uproar Festival co-headliners, Godsmack and Seether, round out the top three Active Rock radio songs respectively this week with “1000hp” and “Words As Weapons.”
CHART HIGHLIGHTS:
I’m very pleased to see newcomers, Starset, make it into the Top 10 with “My Demons,” although I wish that they had done it with “Halo,” the song that I consider to be the best track from their recently-released album, Transmissions. Clearly, the decision-maker on this one got it right, so I’ll defer to them and stick to reviewing.
I’m really digging the new Escape The Fate single, “Picture Perfect,” which got a nice 5-spin boost this week, slightly edging out Fozzy for the #32 spot on the chart.
Fozzy may not have been taken seriously at first because they are fronted by former WWE superstar, Chris Jericho, but make no mistake; Jericho is a very good singer and songwriter, and this band is no joke! Their incredible tune, “Lights Go Out” – off of their latest album, Do You Wanna Start A War – is a solid Active Rock radio performer.
CHART CLIMBER:
The biggest climb on this week’s Active Rock radio charts came courtesy of Christian hard rockers, Thousand Foot Krutch, who debut in the Top 50 with their new single, “Born This Way,” a nice little radio rocker with a shredding guitar solo.
BAM-BAM’S BIG ONES!:
Get your minds out of the gutter! “Bam-Bam’s Big Ones” is not about my nether region. This weekly feature is simply one man’s opinion on the music that you SHOULD be listening to if you like the music that is regularly featured on Hard Rock Daddy and the HRD Radio Report. You dig? No payouts, no bias…just killer music that I get the chance to hear before others because I’m cool like that!
This week’s “Bam-Bam’s Big Ones!” are:
Message To Venus – “Hollow”
Brilliantly executed new rock that fuses elements of…come to think of it, I don’t know what they’re fusing because they sound like no one else that I’ve heard before! The band’s 2010 EP, The Envelope, took Active Rock radio by storm with the single “Universal You,” which was featured on The Witness soundtrack (an action-horror film released in 2012).
Message To Venus returns this fall with a new album entitled Victims & Villains, a solid, much heavier and brainier effort. “Hollow,” the first single from the album, should break onto the Active Rock radio charts in the very near future!
HellYeah – “Moth”
Vinnie Paul and the boys hit back with their second release from their brilliant Blood For Blood album. This one is a smoker that is sure to get your blood pumping like the title track did when it was released as a single ( it still sits in the top 20 of the Active Rock radio charts). It won’t be long before “Moth” joins “Sangre Por Sangre (Blood For Blood)” on the charts!
Young Guns – “I Want Out”
Don’t let the name fool you; this band is not that young. Their maturity will win you over with this track, a nice little rocker featuring bluesy guitar that will have the ladies shakin’ it! “I Want Out” has some nice preliminary legs on it as it heads towards the Active Rock radio charts.
I CALL B#LL$HIT!:
Each week (for reasons unknown) there are songs on the chart by bands that don’t belong on Active Rock radio. Hard Rock Daddy launched the HRD Radio Report to showcase and report on hard rock artists on radio. Rather than edit these bands off of the chart, we decided to add an “I CALL B#LL$HIT!” feature to this column to point out the bands that have no place on Active Rock radio.
Here are this week’s “I CALL B#LL$HIT!” bands:
- Black Keys
- Dirty Heads
- Weezer
WRAP-UP:
That’s it for this week! Tune in to HardRockDaddy.com every Tuesday for the HRD Radio Report and Bam-Bam’s Breakdown.
Next Tuesday, we bring you interviews from my friends at Roadrunner Records as they talk about their artists that are currently climbing the charts, and we’ll also check in with Godsmack drummer, Shannon Larkin, reporting from the Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival. It’s all happening exclusively on HardRockDaddy.com!
Peace/Out!

– THANK YOU!!!

Thanks for your support, Jackie! We’re very excited about this new weekly feature, and the feedback to “I CALL B#LL$HIT!” has been great. We added that as a way of addressing the songs and bands that have no place on Active Rock radio, but it looks like it might become a favorite section for a lot of readers. Now that it’s received such great feedback, it’s only going to get more intense. Check back next week to see how we dial it up a notch!
