Another Lost Year’s debut album, “Better Days,” was the first album review ever featured on Hard Rock Daddy. The powerful lyrics on the album are delivered with raw emotion by frontman, Clinton Cunanan. By the end of the album, you realize that “Better Days” are the ones that follow days of pain, internal struggle, frustration, disappointment and the sadness that goes hand-in-hand with the harsh realities of life. ALY’s latest single, “The End Of You And I,” off of their upcoming sophomore album, shows that at least some of Cunanan’s anguish has subsided. Given my personal situation on this bittersweet day, there is some solace in knowing that others have come through similar situations to experience “better days.”
Although “The End Of You And I” seems like it would be angst-ridden based on the title, the song is actually incredibly melodic. There is a sweet sense of peace to the song that simply didn’t exist on “Better Days.” If the smile on Cunanan’s face in the video is any indication of his current state of mind, it is clear that he is not nearly as tortured as he was on the band’s debut album.
As Cunanan goes, so goes Another Lost Year.
The polished, more mature sound of “The End Of You And I” is a bit of a diversion from the edgy sound of songs like “War On The Inside,” but ALY fans will not be disappointed at all. Cunanan’s distinct vocals are as strong as ever, complemented by impressive vocal harmonies on the infectious choruses. Heavy riffs and strong percussion lay the foundation for what may be the most dynamic song of the band’s young career.
ALY fans are used to Cunanan delivering his message with agonizing emotion. However, sometimes less is more. “The End Of You And I” shows how much Cunanan has evolved since the band’s debut album, and if this song is a precursor of things to come, it won’t be long before Cunanan is mentioned in the same breath as the top singers in hard rock today.
Another Lost Year is likely to prove their moniker to be ironic by this time next year. As a hard rock band on the rise, 2014 will not be “another lost year” for these North Carolina rockers.
